    October already - WTF!!

Anyway, bought 5L of Swarfega Metal Cleaner and Restorer (thanks @paradox ) to clean all those nuts and bolts and hopefully get them usable again.
Will also use it to clean some of the other metal such as the rear drums, but thought I would start on smaller bits first.

Pic of said liquid and the asorted bits:

    Let battle commence:

Will see tomorrow how it does (hope there will be something left......)

As an aside, checked the government website for MOT and it says my van was first registered in '71...........

    Very strange!

Seemed to work OK, so trying it again but with a slightly stronger mix:

Don't have a bucket big enough for the drums so having to turn them!!!

Plus - a loverly sky with the sun setting, looked better in the flesh.

The acid attack continues - more bolts, nuts (ouch!) and washers (plus assorted other things) cleaned and rust removed - first batch completed:

    Second batch completed:

    And my first casualty :(
    [IMG]

A few more bits to finish off as found the drum brake levers and stuff so giving them a go.
Will then look to get a bigger tub to do the drums properly. The parts that have been attacked by the acid have come up very well.

Got a bigger tub to put one of the brake drums in so lets see what it looks like tomorrow.
Sorted out the remaining bits which I put in the acid and all good.

With some of the bolts thought I would mock up one of the rear suspension bits and looking good :)

  6. What paint are you using?

  7. Some old tins of enamel I had in the garage.
Will go over with the epoxy mastic next!

Managed a few hours today, cleaning parts still.
Took the first brake drum out of the acid and started to clean it up - left some weak solution in the inside as it was heavely pitted but now all good:

Had put the steering arm (pitman) in the acid as it had develop some surface rust.
Looking better now and rubbed some oil over it:

Started on the fan housing, took the flap linkage off and gave it all a good clean:

What it was covered in before cleaning:

  9. 07.10.2017 Cont:

The fan housing is in good nick apart from surface rust and a little area that needed a touch of weld:

    Welded:

Then a coat of rust convertor. Will give it tickle of paint next, just got to decide what colour though:

Busy month working on van bits this month!!

Started to tidy up the intake manifold - first shows mid clean and next shot shows them finished - rubber boots in very good condition:

Fan cowl, rear hub, valve covers and front hub cover all prepped and ready for a coat of paint:

Back of the fan cowl with a few coats of VHT black paint (plus a few of the other bits in the background):

These are part of the mechanism for moving the flaps, all cleaned up and a coat of paint:

A few other bits cleaned and prepped but no pics.

    Cheers

  11. I’m not sure how epoxy mastic will fair over the top of enamel I know other paints won’t go over the top of it.

  12. Vht paint needs to be heated quite hot to cure properly
If you don’t it has a habit of lifting from the surface

  13. I knew this - plan to fire up the oven and put this stuff in (this is what it says on the tin if you can't use the engine.....)

Received a package from Heritage today.
Ordered a cover so put this on tonight - good job there was no wind otherwise it wouldn't have happened:

Also in the package was the drum brake backing plate so tried one on for size with the drum :)

Funny how the black VHT paint looks more grey but hey-ho.

Taking about VHT paint, on the fan cowl that is visible when in the engine bay, decided to use a more anthracite colour:

I like it, what do you think?

Nothing major tonight as not feeling to clever.

Coat of paint on the steering box:

Removed surface rust off the gearbox support thingy and a flash of paint:

Also derusted this shield (goes around the base of the upright oil cooler) and added a flash of paint:

Finally, derusted the engine tinware that goes under the back of the engine:

  19. Maybe give it a good going over with a butane blow torch

  20. Was thinking of putting it in a large box of some kind then using a fan heater on max heat??
