I have all the flaps in place but no thermostat which stopped working 3-4 months ago, will it be ok to leave it off or should I replace and if so does anyone have one or know where I might buy one

  2. Better with at this time of year but as your flaps are in place it will be OK without, just a longer warm up.
    I have the same situation

  3. Always best to have one, but finding one, good luck.

VW didn’t fit a thermostat for no reason. It reduces warm up time as mentioned, it also reduces fuel consumption, engine wear and emissions and helps the oil get to the correct temperature and reduces contamination.

Unfortunately, new Type 4 thermostats are hard to find in the UK and are expensive and many don’t fit them. Type 1 thermostats can be modified to fit although they don’t have the correct opening temperature, but anything is better than nothing.

Type 4 thermostats are available from the US

There was someone selling reconditioned ones in this country

  9. I have a NOS boxed thermostat for my type 4 somewhere but I'm damned if I can find it

I haven't fitted one of the new units to my type 1 either because I've been told they fail in the wrong position!

  10. I bought a bunch of thermostats from awesome powdercoat a while back for a couple of projects I had on. I have x2 new type 4 thermostats left over. I’ve also got a thermostat bracket and pulley, again new from awesome powdercoat.
    PM if interested.

There is some guy in the USA who gets them made up ...can't remember now but someone on here managed to get some ....they also opened up at the right temp
Or you can get one from VWH ...new but opens up at a slightly lower temp .
You also have to make a slight modification ...nothing technical . It comes with instructions when you buy it .

I have it on mine and works fine ...better than nothing .
Not a bad idea to have a group buy if we can find the source .

I only started having overheating problems when a thermostat was fitted to my type 4. I’m sure it wasn’t the reason behind the overheating though, just a Marmite engine builder. Prior to than I ran quite happy for around 4 years without a stat.

Major has run without a stat or the flaps for a good 40k miles as the PO in Santa Cruz removed them for a remote, second oil cooler.

I do have the parts to refit at some point, when I get round to it (unless we go Scooby that is) :)

Fit a scooby. I really enjoy having mine. (No doubt that’ll change if a sensor goes )

  19. A bit dicey without the flaps in place Mork!
