I had exactly this debate with a colleague about 10 years ago. He's a big fan of the royals and predictably our debate came down to the financial implications and I proffered some opposing views and stats. A few days after our debate he came into the office one morning and slammed down 11p (can't remember exact amount) on my desk, chuntering 'now shut up, i've paid yours!' He'd continued to research and had found that they do indeed cost us, and that cost amounted to approx. 11p per 'loyal subject' each year. As a fabulous academic and very honest chap, i trusted his research and graciously accepted my refund... obviously while chuntering something about meritocracies and outmoded institutions
