The old fuel pipe issue !!! Who can you trust !!!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by 3901mick, Jun 22, 2018.

  1. i changed my fuel lines and breathers to 100% ethanol graded from bricwerks vw. it wasn't the cheapest but all looks fine.

  2. Hi all,

So after smugly saying the other day that my fuel hoses were OK i found mine were all perished and cracked today!

I got this "100% ethanol resistant" fuel hose from advanced fluid solutions a few years back, this particular piece photographed here has actually been on the bus maybe 18 months max.

To say I'm not impressed is a f****** understatement, this could have set my van, and possibly my family on fire not to mention send all my hard earned money and work of the past 3 years up in smoke.

I bought this in good faith trying to do it properly and safely its not like i just bought any old chinese crap off ebay.

After speaking to @Paul Weeding though he suggests that R9 only lasts 3 years...

    SO

I have fuel injection, does anyone have a definitive proven supply for 7.6mm ethanol resistant fuel injection hose?

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Don't think you can trust any of the claims made about fuel hose. Probably best to still change it every other year or whatever

  4. I think its more about the heat in the engine compartment rather than the fuel, they all seem to be going from the outside in.

Gates Barricade 4219BG is one of the best and exceeds SAE 30R14T1 specifications, it should be fine for low pressure applications but not for fuel injection.

  7. Thats fine then, mine's a normal carb based 1600. They produce the same for an FI engine, 4219BF Barricade

pretty sure it is the heat more than the fuel which was why I questioned the temperature range of the AFS fuel line @ 125 degrees..

I took a look at the fuel line I took off. It was a reinforced fuel and oil hose . The outer was cracked where the temperature was obviously higher. All the other hose was perfect. So I cut the perished hose along its length in the area it was cracked. The inner rubber hose was 100% crack free and flexible .. However where the hose clip secured it to the carb the hose was pretty perished and in fact leaked after it was checked in the area of the carb..

I still had a length of the original hose so used this and replaced the traditional hose clips with ones designed for fuel lines.. Fingers crossed but thanks to this thread I had definitely been prompted to check my fuel line which would definitely have failed at the carb connection sooner than later so big thanks to the original poster :)

  10. Indeed, I think I was wrong about the R9 stuff I'd used before, apparently that has a known lifespan, this stuff is supposed to be fit and forget.

Worth a go, I'll be checking it though...

  11. I love Marmite ;)

  12. just run modern hard fuel pipe with quick connectors that's whats going on mine , to hell with rubber hose

  13. Mine is FI, I fitted the AFS Bio Fuel hose.....as said above , not cheap, Cohline branded. Plus I bought all the clamps off them too, good quality....tightened ok with out threading.
After having R9 split and leak when trying to start engine, from one of the hoses near starter motor :eek::eek:. I'd only owned the bus a few months, scared the hell out of me :(
Having an electric fuel pump, it squirted it out big time, proper big puddle of petrol under the bus
Luckily the drivers window was open and I heard the splashing sound of it leaking onto the drive and stopped turning the engine over.
R9 was only a few months old!!!.......wanted better piece of mind.

There was a really detailed thread about the types of fuel lines on Samba, with test results etc but I can't find it now, sorry.
I still have a good look around when ever I'm under there.
Been fitted 2 years now, all looks ok.
IMO, cheap doesnt pay off in the long run.

There is no ethanol in Esso Synergy Supreme+ super unleaded, (unless you fill up in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland) and it's what I use - happy to pay the extra for not having ethanol in the fuel.

  15. AFS say it's "fit and forget" in their description of it, but the sound and smell of split hoses will never leave my mind.
    Check you hoses peeps

  16. You may know this already, put if you've got a petrol smell after all the hoses are changed, check the Fuel T piece at the top of the engine bay, mine was split.
Also the fuel breather pipe that hides behind the spare wheel well, this was the state of mine, it's a bugger to get to. o_O

  17. Got that cohline stuff from AFS fitted yesterday so will keep an eye on it, I must say its FAR easier to work with, very workable and easy to push onto fittings versus any other hose i've used even with a slightly smaller ID of 7.3mm i was pleasantly surprised.

I need to look at and sort out my tank breathers before i'm back on the road, mine are disconnected at the moment as I've converted my engine to megasquirt and didn't know what to do with those lines, are they supposed to connect to those weird steel "bottles" that live up in the air intakes on the side???
