The Majorhangovers' Christmas Trip to Paris

  1. Well we're back in one piece, as is Colin hooray!!!

The trip didn't get off to a great start as the day we were due to leave I got an e-mail telling me that our ferry was "broken" and wouldn't be going anywhere! Luckily I managed to get hold of the sister company who told us we could get another ferry if we got down there at our allocated time. As we were supposed to be getting a ferry to Dieppe (we were going to Carcassone originally) we decided to change and get one to Dunkirk instead, as you do ;D

Here we are waiting in the wind and rain

After arriving at Dunkirk at 2.00 am their time we had already decided to head for Bruges as I've always wanted to go there. Plus we couldn't get into our campsite in Paris until 2.00 pm the next day ^-^ However, we didn't fancy walking around at 5.00 am so using the magic of the internet I managed to find a sort of Aire and after dumping all the crap into the front we passed out fully dressed until 8.30 am. When we woke up we decided we needed a) a wee and b) a massive coffee so after checking out the Aire and realising there were no loos we headed off into Bruges.

Even though it was dark and rainy Bruges was stunning and literally every other shop was a chocolate shop, excellent ^-^

Feeling very sad to be leaving Bruges we set off for Paris. Luckily the free sat nav I had downloaded on my phone worked brilliantly, apart from the turn off we needed, so we made pretty good time and arrived about 2.30 pm.

There was also a takeaway called PouPizz which made us laugh like children ^-^

We were the only campervan there - this was just our row

We did have one cool neighbour though 8)

The next day we took a boat trip to see a few of the sites

A very far away view of the Mona Lisa

Then on to the Eiffel Tower

Then off again on our travels to the Champs Elysee and the Arc de Triomphe - it was rammed!!

I desperately wanted to go into this department store but it shut early on Christmas Eve so I had to make the most of the fabulous Disney window displays

Got back to the site and the restaurant was shut so we popped into the shop and picked up a massive tin of Cassuolet which we cooked in the van with potatoes and it was lush ^-^ Watched Men in Black 3 and then went to bed!

Christmas Day was mainly spent loafing and watching Ice Age 4 and then we went out for dinner at a great French/German restaurant where we had massive meat skewers, chips, dessert and Irish Coffees, lovely. Had a few drinkies after and then staggered back to the site.

Boxing Day was Versailles Day for me but to be honest it was a bit of a let down. The building itself and the grounds are amazeballs but there was no sense of the history and to be honest it was a bit tacky :(

All in all we had a lovely time but I would never go back at Christmas, it's just too busy or too shut!

The campsite was wonderful and I would happily use it again especially as it had the shuttle bus which took you to Porte Maillot, the nearest metro town.

Colin was perfection and didn't let us down once (although his gears went a bit funny at times!) and as our return ferry was also cancelled we were able to go back via Calais at our choice. I also got a full refund today from the ferry company which is a nice treat.

Sorry it's so long and well done if you got this far :))
