Dammit if I’d known you were so good at spit and polishing, you could’ve done my ‘new’ one..... now it’ll just have to be fitted all dirty!

That's a cracking job. Which fluid do you use in your ultrasonic cleaner, Snotty?

  4. Cleaned up my prototype bay bumpers...fount a little bit of filler in the rear....

Seems someone didnt fancy straightening any of the dents out, an absolute wizard with the filler tho. None was cracked or flaking, must have put some effort into that

On the plus side, no rust! The front only needs a couple of patches then they'll be powder coated and ready to roll! [IMG][IMG]

  6. Wouldn't advise sticking your whole dissy in an ultrasonic cleaner if you can't strip it completely...and that's not going happen, unless you're a masochist. They're surprisingly hard to take apart. The bottom drive dog is held on with a solid, pressed-in pin (not a roll pin as I'd assumed), and the upper part of the shaft is held in place with the smallest c-clip I've ever seen. It's about the size of a proton. Good luck getting that out. Once it is in pieces, all those 40-year-old fibre spacers inside will take the opportunity to fall to pieces. Best left alone.

I took the breaker plates off and gave the mech advance weights/springs a good wash with WD40, rags and Q-tips. Removed 40 years of crud. The body I cleaned/polished with small stainless wire brushes in Dremel - works well on carb bodies as well. Small bits clean up really well by soaking them in a 50% solution of phosphoric acid - strips the rust off and leaves them shiny  It's now back to its (almost) former glory, and it's a real Bosch, not made by the Hee Bum Yu distributor company.

It's a 205AJ that did service for the AD engine I got years ago. Pretty common. Not whether it's the original unit (technically, it's a Beetle 113 part), but seemed to work fine for the previous owner.

Question for dissy gurus: If you clamp the bottom drive dog and operate the mech advance weights, the upper part of the driveshaft under the rotor does rotate, but only about half the angle you'd expect before they hit the endstops. Maybe 10 - 15º. Trying to think why that might be (same on my Mexi 034). Dissy rotating at half crank speed? Any thoughts?

  7. Just slap it in. Be a Distributor Slut. That'll have a few net curtains twitching...

  8. Poly-discs, or 'strip and clean' type things, work really well for paint/filler removal without tearing into the metal!

These are the last ones I bought, don't last as long as the big brands but for the price they work out well

Thought I’d better see if it still works as it’s not been started for months.
Started straight away on the first turn of the key.
    That’ll do for today.

Realised I still slide forward out of the seat so looked at what brackets I need to chop off the mg seats I bought last year...couldn't be @#$#$$ so just back it into the garage again. Need to motivate myself into doing some of the jobs on the van I have waiting for me....

Completed 600 miles this week in it. Dubfreeze last weekend and a random trip to Salisbury to pick up my wife and daughter who had had enough of "railways that time forgot" so gave up on trying to find the train to Southampton on Wednesday evening.
And 5 days commute to work.
