  1. If it was peeing fuel on the right-hand side, likely the filler hose.

  2. Took the pink van out for its first drive since getting its new roof etc, few miles in and the clutch cable went. Joys of motoring. Got a decent photo first though. 20181117_162254.jpg

Just driving it is brave if you don’t know what condition the lines are in.

    Pedant alert:
    A 1600 is a type 1, the van is a type 2.

Popped in the garage to look underneath to see if the first use of mineral oil has made any difference to its little leak....it has:thumbsup: only a drip on the floor....usually there is a 10p sized 'puddle'.

  8. Before I made my incorrect post I checked wiki too, but I miss read it, I'm glad to be corrected though as I'm trying to learn but I'm clueless.

I don't know how people know things about vehicles without being actual mechanics, it's not the most accessible activity

  9. We all had crappy cars as youngsters ;)...

Seriously, worth learning a bit about your van, or you'll be in for a world of pain :(

Techenders sounds like it was made for you...
You don’t need to be a mechanic though to guess what’ll happen if you’re fuel lines / filler is leaking. Seriously, check them before driving it again....
It is 100% a piece of pi*s to check them; even if you end up paying someone else to change them.

  11. I wasn't going to fill the pink van yesterday, so I just put £40 bit the gauge only went to about 1/4.

My anxiety would go mad if I had no fuel gauge and just took a guess at putting fuel in, and also couldn't fill it.

On one of my old vans I kept a petrol van with petrol in just in case the gauge was wonky and I got too low. :)

  13. I'm not daft, but I just need to see someone who knows what they are doing mess around with an engine. I'm going to look at the dates for techenders, even if it's to just watch what others are doing to their van so I know the craic

  14. I hired a t2 a couple of years ago and instead of a fuel gauge it came with a piece of paper with the milage on, sellotaped to the dash and a pencil. The instructions were that "when you've done 150 miles, fill it up again and write the new milage on the paper" and as it wasn't my van I thought nothing of it, ha

150 is a bit low. Loads of people do this at about 200 miles as the gauges can be notoriously sh*te.

I suffered the petrol pouring out after brimming the tank and then parking across a 10% hill in the carpark of the Seal Sanctuary in Gweek.

It turned out to be a tired filling hose. Not split but just floppy and leaking at the top of the hose from tank to the hard elbow behind the paint lid.. I ended up poking around behind the tin lid and smearing some silicone and re making the joint. That stopped the leak until I replaced the hose. . Which was engine out time.
I also replaced the top rubber elbow where it meets the filler cap.
    Petrol smells stopped.

Then I blew up the engine a couple of weeks later...and had to take the engine out again.

I strongly suggest finding somebody to help who has a tool kit and a high lift jack and pulling the engine and DIY.. The two elbows for my bus came to about £50 ( but you beed to check as there are different layouts.. my bus is one with features from both early and late Bays.)

Today I used my bus as a source of mains power for the strimmer at the allotment. Then went shopping in it. When I came home I removed the steering column not with a hacksaw but two 13mm spanners and a crosshead screwdriver and a flatblade...
Rewired the horn wire to the tag on the column instead of a bodge done 18 months ago to pass the MOT.
Then I cleaned up a Bosch SVDA I bought at Slough Swapmeet for £5, hammered the vacuum canister back into shape , scraped grot out from inside ( a million miles of distributor grease and ground down Bakelite) , stuck parts in the ultrasonic cleaner then fitted my Accuspark unit to it. Its no use with points as the cam on the shaft has wear most often seen on a T4 engine with a bad cam break in..
But it has really stable timing compared with the rattly distributor I was running before.
Then built up another spare SVDA with points using the best remaining parts from the other three distributors in my parts box. .

  20. Looked into more ways to sell it as it failed to get any interest on Gumtree or Ebay.
Might stick it in the classified ads in the back of Volksworld next month. Will cost 15% of the value if i sell it at our local classic auction next march. :(
