Took Rhubarb out on a 20 odd mile run yesterday and she ran quite well , she ran better after a hours stop at the pub for some strange reason ,pulled better and sounded smoother ( the van not me ) ;)

Two things were a little troubling and i would like suggestions on a cure for both

1 - usual oily smell through heater .

2 - popping ( backfire ) when i eased off the throttle particuarly after getting up speed and slowing down rapidly , she does occasionally strain to turn over symptons of advnced tiiming i think and can't this lead to popping too ?.

Dya have any thoughts on these problems , love to her them :)

  2. I had a simular problem. Worth checking all your exhaust pipe/manifold connections. I had a loose j-pipe from the cylinder. Backfiring solved!

Didn't someone who had backfiring issues trace it back to a perished inlet manifold boot, am going back a while on that though!

I can vaguely remember as it reminded us to sort them on Gusbus' engine!

  7. It's running lean so check for drawing air in around pipes and joins, don't forget to check servo pipe
Spray some brake cleaner around the inlet manifold etc when it running if the revs change there is a leak

Back firing o overrun will most likely be a hole/leak in the exhaust somewhere Malc.

  10. Had the same backfire/popping problem.

Minor split in the servo hose ( left hand side, down in front of carb)

  11. Hi

I had a heat exchanger leak causing the backfiring/popping down hills, turned out the internal pipe had rusted through. Hence smelly exhaust in cab too!

Also I ended up using a very small amount of firegum on the gaskets to the heads and solved all leakage problems.

    Cheers
    Ben

Heat exchangers are part of the exhaust Malc old chap.

Turn the heating off show off. Oily smell sorted. ;)

And yes it does sound like an air leak in the exhaust. Check all joins. Or ignore it and imagine you have a racing engine :)
