Temporary rust fix

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Louise, May 20, 2019.

  1. What do you recommend to put on rust that you notice, as a temporary measure, if you can't get around to sorting it out just yet? I saw someone on another forum mention waxoyl??

  2. Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 is good stuff, just paint it on and it seals and converts the rust.

  3. Waxoyl (or even WD40) will do.

  4. Or just pop down to halfords and grab a can of vaguely close colour match and slap it all over. Works for most vans on eBay apparently

  5. Most rust bubbles from the inside out so what you see is just the tip of the iceberg and coating it in anything is pointless.

  9. Apologies I do tend to just say it how it is.
Anyone who’s started picking at a small scab on bodywork only to find it open up into a larger hole knows this.
No wonder product will stop it getting worse.

If it is genuinely surface corrosion then sanding it back to as bare metal as possible and using a zinc oxide rich primer along with a non porous top coat is the best approach.

  12. No need for apologies on here, folks ask the questions and we offer our comments based on our individual experience of the subject. I have used Vactan to good effect to stop rust in its tracks, which can then be overpainted as a temporary measure.

  20. Sounds like the shed base I inherited at our old house. Could have landed a Chinnook on it.
