Tax and mot exemption?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Borninabug, Jan 26, 2020.

  1. My bus is a 1979. First reg 4th June. So it’s technically 40 years old and six or seven months give or take. Does anybody know when it is tax or mot exempt and how do I go about sorting both out.

  2. Your bus is tax exempt this year as it was over 40 years old on 1st Jan 2020..... however, you have to wait until the DVLA update the records on 1/4/20 and then you can apply to change it to historical status which means it will then be tax free, so effectively it has to be over 40 years and 3 months before it qualifies. I know this because my van is a similar age and I tried to change the status earlier this month (without success) and then followed it up with a phone call to the DVLA.

If you don't have an MOT you will need to fill in V112 MOT exemption form when you apply and proof of insurance.

  3. One final point, you have to go into a Post Office- it can't be done online.

  4. Mines the same so roll on 1.4.20

If it’s mot ‘exempt’, what state can it be in? Obviously, it should start, run and stop without crashing and turning into a ball of flames. Just wondering...

  6. It has to be road legal , simple as that .
A cursory roadside check by the local traffic police won't spot the bad brakes or chassis rot but I can see the DVLA roadside checking stations getting more involved..
I'm very sceptical about all these 'freebies' - enjoy it for the time being , there's got to be a catch in the future

  8. The same state you’d present it to an MOT, just because it doesn’t have an MOT it still needs to be fully roadworthy.

  9. Thanks for the answers.
As for roadworthyness my van is a1. However I do find it a little disturbing that others may not be a conscientious as I am.

My van is a rusty old thing.
(See my for sale thread in classifieds). But if I get hit at speed by a modern vehicle, in it, I’ll be pretty much toast, as if I’m in a same model van that isn’t rusty.Ultimatly, my van is ‘safe’ in all the right places, eg no rust within certain perimeters of chassis parts, all steering, suspension, etc, it just looks a dog. A show winning van is still only a very thin coffin. I can obviously see the thing, that if it’s unsafe, it could cause an accident, but being involved in an accident. Well... either way, you won’t be walking away from it. Know what I mean? They are yesterday vehicles in today’s world, on today’s roads. It’s the chance you take, isn’t it?

  11. Sooo....
    It's safe ??
You can be as conscientious as you like - a second opinion is always good.
Take it for a pre mot / mot test and get someone to give it a good going over , it's the only way to be certain.

Like I say, it might be safe and not cause an accident, but in one?

  13. Can't understand what all the fuss is about. Pre 1960's have been mot exempt for years.

Not on these vans though. I know older splits have.

  15. So have loads of bugs, Kubelwagens etc. I think if you have a ageing vehicle you should look after it a bit better than a modern'ish one. I have mine pre-mot checked now which is sufficient I think.

  16. Looking at the photos - if your van gets hit at speed the rust cloud will trigger another ice age !!

Mine had a hole the size of a 5p on the inside of the front wheel arch and the Mot man said it was technically a fail, but he knew that I would be getting it sorted asap and passed it.
Mot pass depends on how friendly the tester is, but the man from the Ministry who pulls you over for a check might not be as understanding.

    I hope so.

  19. I finally got round to this and put the papers in my landy on 2nd April. I Passed a post office on the way home today and spotted the door open and no social distancing line of people outside. I went in and the young lad looked blank when I asked him. I though “oh balls”. He phoned a friend’ scanned a barcode on my v5 looked at the mot exemption declaration through the glass and 30 seconds later I left all sorted.
It really couldn’t have been easier
