Tailpipe, offside exit, for ERNST 120R D22197 silencer?

  1. I've just fitted an as-new ERNST 120R D22197 silencer to our late bay. It came with the camper in a big box of bits. It's good quality, includes the hot air heat exchanger bits, and fits well. Quite a bit quieter than the four-tailpipe performance thing that was on there before, and now we have heating inside too!

One problem, though, is that I don't have a tailpipe to fit it. I ordered a stainless one from VW Heritage, thinking that they would be interchangable, but the stainless pipe is too large a diameter to fit inside the silencer outlet, and the shoulder for the clamp is then too far away from the shoulder on the silencer. Worse, there are subtle bends in the tailpipe, and it bends the wrong way for a right-hand (offside) exit.

Looking online it appears that all the exhausts are designed to have the tailpipe on the left, nearside. So I can't find a tailpipe to fit my silencer which has the right, offside, exit pipe.

Is there somewhere I can get a right-hand tailpipe that would fit an ERNST 120R?

Or some other tailpipe that might fit?

  2. Could you drill out the other flat part [on the left ]
    and add two short pipes

  3. Just had a brainwave: since our camper is a 1978 beast, I assumed the muffler was for a similar aged vehicle. But, since the one-piece tailpipe is clearly too big to connect to it, perhaps the muffler is an earlier one, which takes the two-piece tailpipe?

Does anyone know the muffler end diameter of the tailpipe, for the two-piece old style one?

If I'm right, I should be able to buy a two-piece old-style tailpipe, and it should be possible to attach that so it exits on the right (assuming the separate bracket is symmetrical enough...).

Or perhaps I have a very-rare muffler that someone else might find useful? In which case perhaps I sell it and buy an up-to-date replacement?

  4. Is it on upside down ?

  5. Nope, it wouldn't fit the other way up, for example the inlet manifold heater flanges have to be at the top.

Some more research (what did we do before the Internet?) has solved the conundrum.

The muffler is the type used on T2 Late Bays from August 1971 to July 1973. Those vehicles had the two-piece tailpipe, but, for these two years only, the tailpipe was longer. It still exited on the left-hand side of the vehicle, but started from the right-hand side of the muffler. Here's a drawing (from the HJS website) showing the muffler with a right-hand exit tube, and the extra-long two-piece tailpipe. The diagram also explains why there is a bracket sticking out of the left-hand end of the muffler, so I'm certain this is the drawing for the part I have:

I could finish it off if I can find a two-piece tailpipe for vehicles built between August 1971 and July 1973. Since earlier and later mufflers will fit the engines of these years, it seems that no-one bothers to supply parts for this rare muffler. :(

Or, if someone with a Bay built in this period needs a period-correct muffler, I'd be happy to sell it for a reasonable price. It was new, but with some surface rust, before I fitted it, and it has done perhaps 20 miles so far. Enough to burn off the remaning paper labels, but it's still pretty-well new.

  7. Hello I have the same exhaust and wondered if you managed to find the correct damper pipe to save me the job of making one to fit.

  8. Found one on ebay part number 211251157e

  9. Great exhausts Ernst wish mine hadn’t broke , on mine the tail pipe was swage fixed on perminantly but caught on speed bump and came off, so would think you will have to find a complete one if it’s same ?

  10. This is the longer damper pipe needed for silencers with the outlet on the offside:

It was used from August 1971 to July 1973 only.

I have a part-worn silencer (as pictured above) available, if anyone wants it. It's used but should have some years of life in it.

I've swapped it for a later silencer and stainless tailpipe on our van, as she's parked outside and the non-stainless tailpipe only lasted a year and a bit.

  11. Im after the long pipe/damper if you still have that
