Ive got a 2ltre T4 engine with twin 34icts that needs to come out as it leaks a fair bit of oil, my question is how difficult is it to replace it with a recently rebuilt T1 dual port 1600 with a newly refurbished single solex 34pict, I’m not interested in going fast and basically I’ll just be using it for Sunday trips out to the pub, picnics, shopping fishing etc etc
I know originally my camper was a 1600 T1 which the po converted to a T4,
Will the new engine bolt to the gearbox? , will the T1 engine support bar just bolt in?

If your gearbox is a 3 rib the same one that was connected to your original 1600 and the imput shaft was not altered ...you should be fine
As for the support bar the original fixing holes on the chassis should still be there .

  3. Step backwards I think, Baz. Why not just fix the leak?

I’ve been thinking the same thing this morning @snotty Rich, I’ve done the push rod and rocker cover seals, what else could be leaking, the bus drives very well it just stinks of burning oil which drips down onto the exhaust/ heat exchangers then the fumes come into the cab

Sounds just like an old British motorcycle....................you'll know when it needs oil when it stops burning/smelling of oil!!:D

  6. Oil cooler seals? Which side is it dripping from?

Worst case, pull the engine to have a good look. Going back to a type 1 will be a world of pain, mate.

    it’s a right hand drive

  11. I just swapped type 1 for type 4 and it’s so much more awesome to drive and as mine is a stocker (apart from twin 40 idfs) it’s great and reliable.

    Don’t go back!!

RHS (assume drivers side) oil leak - oil filler tube, push rod tubes - I did mine twice before they stopped leaking, rocker cover, fuel pump mount, breather box and oil running down.

    Some thoughts there.

I used a dab of rtv on the push rod seals and they seated right second time - I had a v small leak but it ran all over!!

  12. As above, could be your filler tube.

As Snotts says stick with the t4, should be easier and cheaper than changing Bazza

Im so glad I started this thread you’ve all made me see sense, I’ve decided to keep my T4 and sort out the oil leaks be prepared for some questions, the oil filler tube is something I haven’t checked , is the oil cooler on the right side?
