Syncro - let’s off-road!

  1. Ta - I’ll skive off work for a morning this week and see what is what- I could feel if not see that the spreader plates are there and there are some washers- couldn’t tell if they are the serrated ones. Maybe the bolts are chewed up. The CV boots all round look new and the front outer CVs are def new as there are no hub dust caps on and they are all shiny.

Hmm - Bit of a extended shake down test is in order to see what else falls off before the Artic circle expo is booked in.

  2. Has it got the front outer CV guards fitted to it like this?

£86 plus the postage seemed a bit steep so I made a set for under a tenner using a template i found online, some 5mm thick rubber matting and some 2mm scrap steel.

  8. Well it seems I’m going to get the gearbox up to Aiden and Neil @theBusmonkey in December to see what is going on and get it fixed as it’s too much for my mechanically sympathetic disposition to take with it not being as it should be.

Still it’s being used to collect kitchen worktops and carcasses, tip runs and splashing around in muddy puddles.

I ask saw this one in Bristol and consoled myself that although his gearbox probably works better than mine, he has more rust- swings and roundabouts eh?

Dropped the 'box and diff oil on G last week. It's 25k since the last change and we're off to Spain via the Pyrenees for Xmas so wanted to get some fully synthetic in there.
Bare in mind we did at least 8k of those 25k on roughasasshole roads in Morocco including dunes, plus some fairly extreme green-laning here this year.

The front diff has only ever had the backlash reset rather than a full rebuild.
The short punk haircut with no sludge on the box plug is a massive relief.
You're in good hands @Mattlad

    Such a pussy.
Come on, let’s at leadt find some mud before you take the fecker apart!

  11. Excuse me Sir! I have found an off road lane that resulted in me having to reverse 1/4 mile as it wouldn’t go up a steep hill and nearly falling into a drainage ditch....

You just wait till I can get the gear I’m going for instead of none or all of them at once, then you’ll see.

  14. Today is (start) to get gearbox out.

In my typical style using a collection of crap tools and inappropriate working areas I’m attempting to get the gearbox out.

So far I’ve got these bits off - propshaft
protection rails and engine sump guard.

more as it happens -or not as I am waiting for a lovely new socket set to turn up as I’m sure most of the nuts are not imperial and that’s all I can find in my chaotic tool kit.

  17. Do you want to come and drop the box out of my caravelle when you're finished?

  18. Of course.

Stick it in a Jiffy bag and get it DHL to drop
It off here - one of my drivers to do this today was so I don’t have to finish the 1st fix bathroom plumbing I started yesterday. If it’s here in the morning It’ll be out by lunch. Otherwise I have to do plumbing - I hate plumbing.
