Seen a stripped engine for sale locally. It has a As21 case Apparently its out of a bus?. Thinking of going for a look anything obvious I should be looking out for. Thinking it might be good for spare parts. No history with it unfortunately.

If its around £100-£300 its worth a look, but you have to ask why it was abandoned half disassembled. That means it probably was going to cost good money to reassemble.
It probably does have some good spares. I definitely got lucky on an AS21 as they arent as old as some engine cases.
Ideally you could split the case halves and see if the crankshaft bearings had been moving and marking the case metal which wouldbrequire a line bore.

If you can afford to totally lose the money you paid, buy it.
I would have personally tended towards taking that risk when I previously needed a new engine.. I risked £51 a few years back on a oily blob in the shape of an engine..

This time round I was encouraged to buy a really new engine by my wife. I took the opportunity to spend £2400 for a no worries engine.

Thanks for your words of advice Mike. I'm going to make an offer and see how it goes, it's not much money. Can you tell by looking at it that its a 1600

  4. I always assume the worst and see where the conversation goes .

At least it`s a twin port so if one of the heads is good it`ll be a better deal - start at 50 quid and go from there ..

Youll be lucky if the case isnt trashed so deal accordingly but worth a punt if you get it for reasonable money .

    Good luck

You can measure the inside diameter of the cylinder castings. 85.5mm would be stock. 1568, 87.5mm is a 1641. Both fit unmachined heads and engine blocks.

If the pistons and cylinders have been sitting around for a while they will need cleaning up and if they show wear then you might as well swap them for new.

Cylinder heads - look for cracks to spark plug holes.. they are likely to lead to grief. Between valve seats not so bad..
