Sticky steering wheel

  1. Cheers for the heads up. I wasn't actually going to remove it to put the cover on, but I WAS going to remove it to fix the indicator self-cancel system and realign the steering wheel as it's slightly out. Darn it!

  2. no you need a needle for mr steering ones and dont need brogues or braces :D

  3. Ha! You're having some of the same issues we had with our new bus last year. :)

The indicator self cancel probably just needs the switch housing sliding up - the gap between the steering wheel and the housing should be as small as possible. There was a thread on here recently which is relevant...
There's some "half moon" discs inside the housing which hold it in place. People reported swapping them over can improve things.

  4. its always nice to have it slightly out of align it proves someone has had it off at somestage before and not checked when they have put it back or took it off whilst wheels are turned and put it back straight

  5. Erm... the indicators have a self-cancel mechanism?

    Please tell me you're joking.

  6. they do but the earlier ones are not easy to find or fit always ,so its better to use your hand or pinky finger , i like to know ive left mine on too:D

You probably need to move the indicator housing up so as the little buttony thing corresponds with the slot in the out column.

  8. Yes, previous owner was sure they used to work and only recently had 'slipped'.

There's a steering wheel lock too!

  9. is their not a cream off white ring in their malc ?? how did you move it up ?

Loosened the two retainer screws and pushed, I did take it completely off yesterday so saw the little cream sticky out thing- yes a little cream peg.

  12. Hmmm. Something to look at.

My van doesn't have a single original switch in it and I'm wondering if that goes for the stalks as well...

Don't know Barn, I am having problems sourcing any new bits for my steering column - it's that old 72/73 model thing again isn't it. or 72 74 or in the case of the steering column.. That's the point of the other thread.. parts!

  14. Just revisiting this thread as I'm having trouble getting the old steering wheel off. As it's an early late bay (73) I believe the splines are tapered. I've tried pulling, wiggling, WD40, hammering, boiling water, the lot... :(

So.. anyone got a link for a suitable puller? I've got a machine mart near me but not sure what to search for.

Damaging the old steering wheel isn't an issue as I've got an identical but refurbed one to go on, and the original is already cracked and sticky and rubbish.

  15. I tried and failed to remove the steering wheel from our '72 bus, so I valiantly gave up and bought a steering wheel cover - yet to be fitted(!)
Don't pull too hard, or you may damage the rubber steering coupler at the bottom of the column. This connects the steering column to the steering box under the van.

Anyway, the VWoA Service manual shows this device for removing '68-'74 steering wheels:

I have yet to source one. If you manage to find something suitable, let me know!

    Never tried it, but?

  17. I still don't get what they used... I need some sort of puller like a ball joint splitter but bigger. Just something I can wind up until it pops I guess,

  18. Carefully use a g clamp or give it a good slap with a rubber mallet. Undoing the nut and going for a drive helps too
    :)

  20. Thanks. A G clamp is easy to come by. Can I use one with the special washer? If not what size 3 pronged puller would I need?
