Sticky steering wheel

  1. I'm sorry, this thread is about the very important subject of steering wheel covers.

Can you come and put mine on for me if I buy it off Ebay? :D

No thanks. Thanks for the kind offer though, but I do like you as friend. :)

I'd use it as an excuse to get a nice timber one from MCJ.

I have been waiting for Ricks reply to the thread title. :D

  5. I cleaned mine with Flash wipes and they did the trick, along with some other very grubby areas of my van (when I bought it). It's the sweat and oils from your skin that stick to it that cause the wheel to get dirty of course. Regular cleaning with similar wipes should keep it good...

  6. my leather one but it had to be stitched [IMG]

  7. that looks nice

  8. Lovely. Best thing I bought for my bus, I reckon. Needs a bit of a tweak, but it has been in for five years.

Only prob is that the handle gets bloody cold in winter.

  9. I've tried baby wipes, which get a lot of black off but it still feels sticky in places and I can see it coming back. Is it just dirt and grime soaked into the wheel or is it the lining (still can't work out if it's vinyl or not) melting?

Not really wanting to try a soft scourer, but would it do the trick?

It's a hard plastic type material & it's breaking down due to age & U.V. degradation. Short of taking it off & restoring it the quick fix is a cover. Otherwise replace it with a new wheel or one of the after market posh wooden rimmed ones.

  11. Ok I'll get the cover as a quick fix. I want to keep the original wheel so at least that way one day I may get the impetus to restore it.

  12. I wouldn't use anything too abrasive, but I think I did use a soft (used) scourer, but the Flash wipes in the green packet worked a treat. A cover is always an extra protection to stop grease etc forming but regular cleaning is always a good idea

  13. Cillit Bang and star drops will clean off the stickiness.

plus eleventy on the vinyl covers, mine came with one on and I kept having to re-lace it.
But suddenly I cracked it and it's not moved in 15 or 16 years.

  14. Those stitch covers do look a bit nicer than the wrap around ones. Looking at the video on Ebay you lace it through set loops on the outer of the leather, rather than make your own holes. Is that right?

Or buy exactly the same wheel of ebay for a third of the price....

  16. mines a mr steering i think thats what hes called one , if you do get one make sure you get right age one. Its needle n strong cotton (comes supplied) job thru holes but they are small and try and do it to their vid it pulls it up nice and tight that way , if you have a lady that sews she MIGHT do it better for you ,plus it saves you getting a crooked neck;), plus you can get various colours if you want something different , good luck with what ever you decide , sticky steering wheel is a pain intit.

  17. Yes, it's got lots of holes in it, like driving gloves and brogue shoes.
It's apparent how to do it, I didn't use a needle, it was black plasticky stuff that threaded through.
Tying it off at the end was a challenge.
But it's been sorted for years.

  18. I bought a Mr. Steering cover off eBay. I was going to take the steering wheel off to do it indoors, but those early steering wheels are very difficult to remove as the column has tapered splines which widen towards the bottom. The steering wheel is basically wedged on, and needs a puller to remove - JFYI.
