Sticky steering wheel

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by LewBLew, Apr 6, 2014.

  1. Just got myself a '73 late bay and it has the steering wheel below. As I drove it home the material (vinyl, leather..?) got extremely sticky until it started making my hands go black.

I've tried to clean it with baby wipes and Mr Sheen and it's improved but I think after a bit of use it'll be bad again.

Is it possible to recondition these, or seal them somehow?

Baby wipes make it worse, take it off and respray it.

  5. Hang on hang on hang on... you have to sew the cover on? Eeek!

  6. I think it's more like lace it up, rather than sew it. Like sewing your shoes up ;)

Not sure that's why I never said a type of paint, I know people refurb steering wheels but have no idea of what paint they use - sorry!.

If it is like mine then lace up it is and a great addition!

  9. I can barely tie my laces ;)

Does it come with holes ready made? Otherwise I could end up with a dogs dinner on my steering wheel.

Mine took a lot of cleaning with various solvents, filled with marine epoxy filler and sanded back to shape (it had cracks and chunks knocked out of it). Painted with normal black gloss aerosol paint (too soft really).

Wrapped with 10 metres of 10 mm wide black "craft" leather strip off eBay. Had to re-stitch some of the stitched joins in the tape as the stitching frayed over time (no farm animal is 10 metres long). After about 25000 miles some of the paint is worn on the spokes but it is not sticky. The leather is holding up well.

    T
That's the one - same as mine - wrap around.

  14. I see! The one @StevieJD linked to seems to involve sewing, but yours is just a wrap around cord, am I right?
