    Hello

Someone i know (honest) has said they are having problems getting the crank case tightened up without the crank rubbing/sticking. I've not done this before so I said i'd ask on here.

As far as I know it's a standard t1 engine but don't know for sure just yet.

Any ideas? I''m guessing new bearings and the like have fitted.

    All the best

    Paul.

  2. Have they got the right size bearings? Did they measure everything up?

    Crank should spin easily.

  3. Have they checked crankshaft for trueness (bend)? Have they got the bearings engaged in the dowls correctly? Measure everything & care during assembly is key.

Ok thanks. they said that the dowls all line up but I'll get them to check the trueness of the crank.

They did say it was standard t1 1600 and everything is original. Not quite sure why they took it apart!

  5. What size bearings did they fit? Did they have a good measure up? No point in just swapping them. Are they properly seated?

Apparently is was all taken apart to see how it went back together so literally no changes were made. The engine had a bit of end float on it so it was obviously one to practise on. I’m going up there tonight to see if I can help but I doubt if I can. Maybe fresh eyes is all it needs. What’s the best book on putting it back together? I have Bentley, muir and Haynes.

Yes. As u suggested they are indeed. Having problems lining up the dowels. Any neat tricks, as finding the bearings hard to turn by hand.

  9. If they have bolted the case together with the bearings not aligned with the dowels it will have damaged the bearings.
Ask me how I know

Yes they definitely damaged the bearings but they aren"t bothered as this is an old engine that they are practising on. They are doing a reckie type strip down and put back together. It's an engine with quite a bit of end float bought for £100 just so they can learn with it. But lining up the dowels is definitely proving to be a bit of a stumbling block!

  11. May also be the centre bearing shell halves weren’t seated properly. The dowels shouldn’t fall out.

  14. If you fitted new bearing did you fit the oil slinger disc round the right way - I didn't causing crank to be stiff.

Thanks for all the advice people. Thought the video was really good ( I am very much a visual learner). Makes me realise I’m just playing at being a mechanic! I will pass on all the latest. But if anyone is doing this same job in the London area who knows what they are doing, I think the 3 people doing this job (now including me) could do with watching/ lending a hand. Long shot I know.

    Thanks again.

    Paul.
