Evening all, I’ve just swapped my steering coupler on my ‘79 and it seems twisted? Like the whole steering column has raised about 8mm, I managed to lower it from about 15mm but now it won’t budge. Any ideas what part of reassembly I’ve managed to mess up? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes - the rubber is twisted and not flat as the inner column sits too high. I moved it up slightly to separate the column but now can’t get it lower again Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think what he's meaning is now the whole column has move up it's now pulling the 2 corners of the coupler upwards when he has bolted it back together. The column needs to go back down further if you can....
Yes you are both right I had missed the spacers, have now refitted them but still have same issue. Column is so high now the horn ring doesn’t make contact Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No, coupler is flat when not fitted. Pulls at opposing corners when fitted. Column needs to go lower - but how? Take steering wheel off and clout top of it with a mallet? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If the coupler is now nice and straight with the inner column nicely on top of it, you’ll have to slide the whole ignition switch and stalk caboodle up a bit. Involves slackening the clamp screw (which may be a shear head) under the shroud, then tapping the casting that holds the ignition switch up a bit. That will close the gap.
There’s a sprung cage at the top that goes through the bearing it’s probably lifted out of the bearing and causing the column to sit higher.
It’s not flat as it’s all still fixed up, gonna try and gently drift the inner column downward Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When it’s all bolted together the column is sitting high causing the coupler to bend. All I can think of is the sprung cage has lifted out of the bearing at the top and jammed.
Fixed it. Few gentle taps with a lump hammer and I’ve lowered the column. Thanks all - I shouldn’t have been such a pussy and hit it in the first place Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Where did you get the new coupler from? If I need to replace mine I'm interested in where to get a good one...
