Anyone painted their steels with tyres still in place? (Off the bus though before anyone asks). Any tips for prep, what did you do about the balance weights, best paint to use etc? Many thanks, JT
I let my tyres down did a ring of masking tape down the gap round the tyre and then masked the rest up. I have used PlastiKote with good results, I think it is an enamel type paint, it goes on nice and thick and runs seem to level out well, I did struggle with hammerite and a brush.
Oh and when I had weights I just painted them as I thought I would just re paint when I changed tyres if I needed to, but on my bug I got them to balance from the rear like an alloy
I painted two of my steel wheels one was the spare which was black, obviously off the bus, but I gave them a good wash degreased and dried in all the crevices masked up and around the tyres to prevent overspray and used a couple of cans from Halfords http://www.halfords.com/motoring/pa...y-paints?primary-colour=White&vehicle-make=VW
Prep the wheels, paint the tyres with lots of Swarfega, spray the wheels, wash of the Swarfega. Job done
We did my son's T25 steels which were rusted and pitted. We tried spray paint but the coats were too thin to hide the pitting. We ended up wire brushing, sanding down, anti rust with Vactan and then 2 coats of brush on Rustoleum Combicolour gloss which gave much thicker coating and hid the pits. I think a lot depends on how bad your wheels are and what quality finish you are ok with and of course your budget. Did them with tyres and weights on and masked tyres with masking tape.
I cleaned and sprayed mine with primer then rustoleum 7 1/2 years ago, just starting to see some rust now. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
I never bothered and had two come loose after painting, on my newest set I put a nut on my drill and grinding paste round the seat and gave it abit of a whizzing to save trying to give it a finger in the hole and making a mess of it
I find once youve painted the wheels, if you read a copy of war and peace they are dry enough to polish
