Starting Issues

  1. Hi all,

    New on here.
    We have a Devon Moonraker.
It's having intermittent issues starting. Seems to be a solenoid issue.

Would you take it to a local garage or recommend sticking with an air-cooled specialist?

    Cheers
    Matt

I would take it to a non dealership garage with old- timers on the staff or a VW aircooled specialist.
Or just go to GSF buy a recon starter and an ignition switch barrel, get a Bentley manual, follow procedures, change both and save money and time.

I fixed this once by showing it a well charged battery which I kept in the walkthrough.

Starter was failing. Bought a battery and drove round Devon with it sitting there, eventually changed the battery and no problems for a few years . Was probably dirty connections that really caused the problem, but later had to change the ignition switch barrel as it was burnt out and the starter motor started messing around again.

Now been about 6 years since any starter troubles, no hot start relay needed yet.

  3. Hi Mike,

Many thanks for your response. We've taken her to a specialist to be on the safe side.

We know as is the nature of the campervans there will be things that need doing to keep her going, so going to get booked onto one of the VW courses so we can hopefully keep her better maintained on our own and be a bit more savvy.
