SSP Engines are they any good?

  1. Interested to know for the future whether those who have bought one from a well known supplier, have had good/bad or meh experience with them. Nothing wrong with mine at present (as far as i know) but with Mr L.Petit retired now where do we go for a good replacement engine when needed.

  2. Heritage ones are good , Tudor Morgan ones are good ,never heard a bad thing about The engine shop

After my Heritage one gave up I got a The Engine Shop short block had it about 4 years with no problems.

  4. Had my recon 1600 from The Engine Shop for 2 years (3000 miles so far), with no probs. (Keeps fingers crossed that I haven't jinxed it!!)

  5. my mates vege type4 rebuild seems to be going strong after a good four or maybe five years.

  6. Worth considering the VW engine company, they build the Vege Engines.

  7. I have had a TES 1641 for four years. It's still running like a sewing machine, pulling really well and not burning oil, though the crank case is a bit knocked about and the oil drain plate is held in with bolts rather than studs and domed nuts-should I do something about this..?

  8. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  9. My heritage one has been good for the past 3 years

My Vege type 4 has been going since the ‘90’s and despite all my efforts it’s still going.
    Cue big end failure...

  12. Must admit I had a vege in my old T25 and it was super crap. Only lasted about 3000 miles.

  13. I think Vege were once good, but stopped caring. My JK-sourced Vege seized solid after a few thousand miles. The replacement they sent had about four inches of endfloat.

  14. The Vege ones tend not to get as much protein in their diet.

  15. That sounds like a bit too much endfloat

  16. I exaggerate...but not by much. I’m about to dismantle it, to see what horrors lie within...

  17. I wonder if it’s worse than my old case

  18. Hmm. You might have a bit of bearing movement there, para...

  19. Surprisingly the engine pulled us along fine and didn’t leak much
Doubtful how much longer it would have gone on like that though.

I’ve a as21 case and genuine vw crank now
Case didn’t need align bore and the crank just needed a polish
Crank and flywheel have also been 8 dowelled

Nice bottom end to be putting the bigger cylinders and pistons on

  20. I think TBH they'll go on for ages, even with a lot of endfloat.

Get bored out for 1776 - it's a nice size
