Speakers !!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Redtildead, May 2, 2019.

  1. Apologies if this is a pretty basic query to you experts out there - which I am not !! ( I am new to this site - hallo there - but have had my 75 bay for some 12 years now !). Anyway I am looking to put speakers in the two front door panels - are there any obvious pitfalls I should be aware of that everybody will know about apart from me ???!!!

The doors are designed so that water runs down through them....
I'd put them in the kick panels.

  3. As above, dont do it, theyll get wet
You can get single stereo speakers that fit in the dash where the factory fitment would be.
Sound good & simple to fit with an mdf spacer

  4. I put 6x9s (on their end) in the kick panels. I wouldnt like to be cutting around standard interiors though... You "could" put them in the doors but you'll need to waterproof behind them (have your doors still got the plastic membrane in them too whilst we're on the subject...?)

  5. You can get water resistant speakers for not much money - for the marine market. Doubt the sound quality is up to much but should be up to a bit of moisture in the cab doors.

  6. I put mine in the doors, with additional plate of plywood behind the panel to make it stronger since they are pretty flimsy. I glued these to the back as squares which had the speaker holes already cut and then put the fixings through both. To get around the water issue when i put the membrane back in my doors (it had none before so the panels were getting wet at the back) i added a later over the top of the speak forming like a hood. this would then allow water to run off, and into the bottom of the door in the same way as normal. This protects the speaker fine and have had no issues.

Tried to draw it quickly for you as it seemed easier. The bottom of the membrane just hangs lose into the door cavity, top is taped to the door with tape

Sorry about the picture, best i could do in 2 mins :(

Usually speakers get knackered when iron filings from angle grinding get in them or you blow them with trying to beat the engime noise.

Put the membrane behind them- its no worse than a modern car.

Fit a standard size and then you can always roll up to Halfords and pick up another set of round or elliptical speakers that fit.

  8. Mine are in the doors, no problems so far (7 years on the road...) I have some in the doors of a land rover for over 20 years with no problems, (Blaupunkt with waterproof cones).:)

I still have Sony speakers in my doors that are over twenty years old....they still sound okay as verified by being politely asked to tone it down at the recent volksworld show. It was getting on to one am though...

Get blue tooth speakers if your radio is Bluetooth enabled. A good Bluetooth speaker and radio set up is much more flexible and is the future!

    And needs no fixed wires

I was going to buy a SoundLink III until I listened to a Revolve.

I just jam it in the back somewhere.

  15. If you are going to fit into the door panel, apart from fitting a water run=off as above, you will find that over time the speaker will stretch and distort the door panel. I found the easiest way to prevent this was to fit an aluminium ring behind the door panel that the speaker fits into and the speaker is then fitted using nut and bolts through the door panel and then through the aluminium ring. You can find suppliers of large aluminium 3mm plate rings on ebay - you just need to drill them to take the speaker fitting bolts. This reinforces the hardboard door panel and stops it distorting. But you need to make sure you line everything up so that it fits into the recess in the lower door.
