While having five a few minutes ago , i mentioned to Lou that i was struggling with where to put the spare wheel . Now i know there has been a lot of posts on here on the subject and a lot of people don't bother with a spare wheel they rely on aerosols to get em outa trouble , well soz i don't quite go with that although it does no harm to carry one , no i want a spare wheel , but where to place it ?. When i bought the van it was on the front but i thought it atracted water and thence rust , i have a westy interior with a full width bed so it can't go in the back without removing it every time we put the bed up , i toyed with putting it on the boot lid but the same thoughts came to mind as the front placement , so in short i have been stumped. Lou's throw away remark has just got me thinking -- " why don't you stow it underneath between the chassis rails like they do on modern cars ?" she suggested . At first i thought Nahh would'nt be practicle , but the more i think about it the more it seems to be a good idea , how often do you need a spare , wheres the problem in crawling beneath to get it , if the placement and retiner bracket is designed right it should'nt be a problem , and i have no bellypans so -- i am going to design something , anyone with any thoughts on the design post away , or if you think its impractible let me know , i think its do able -- what do you think ??.
There isn't an area underneath big enough to house it without it sitting too low. Some Westfalia's (SO72) UK Continental with the full width RnR bed did have it on the rear wheel well under a matching cover. You'll find it takes up no space at all. Far less than the Berlin cupboard.
Well I've also got the same problems as above and have decided too see if I can mount my spare on the roof rack ! May be abit fiddly but it's easy to get to the front part of the roof with the door open
My Westy originally came with a 'folding spare wheel' ( well that's what the M code states) What the hell is a folding spare wheel???
I love space saver wheels. Where the hell are you supposed to put the full sized flat? I saw an Audi TT once trying to fit the mother of all wheels in the back after fitting a spacesaver. If you cut your heater channel out I think it might fit between the rails ;D
the only wheel you will fit between the chassis rails is a 10 inch mini wheel but why you would what to carry one
Stick it where it goes inside down your feet end - you'll hardly notice it's there. That's how full width Westy beds were made, as Birdy says. If it did fit under - wouldn't it be great fun getting if off with a flat tyre, lying in a puddle.
Right , ignore all my previous posts in this thread , the bed does indeed pass the spare wheel , i am a numpty but has i already nominated myself , i'm gonna nominate zed for posting too late and Stu for not saying --Malc listen to me " !!. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ Sharp exit stage right --------------->>>>>
I'm going to investigate a space saver and have it in my cupboard. Having spent 10 days away in the bus I didn't really use all the space available. I was messing with my licence plate today and quite fancy it above the bumper.
