To save me googling to find an answer, I’m mounting my spare wheel on the front panel but I’ve heard that the panel can buckle/distort due to the weight...is there a way I can stop this, something I can buy to support it a bit?! Obviously I have the mount for the front but seem to remember someone telling me there’s something I can bolt to the bumper??!!!
Mines on the front. The weight is held by the front panel & the bumper. No issues with distortion . Held by an upside down V shaped support bracket
Mines mounted on the front too. I think the bracket can probably be sourced from the usual suspects (VWH, JK, C&C etc) although I got mine from someone on here... it’s got a couple of bolts through the front panel, and then two supporting legs that bolt to the front bumper and take the weight. 5 years down the line it seems pretty good.
For example.... https://www.justkampers.com/spare-wheel-mount-for-vw-t2-1972-1979.html Edit, sorry just reread that you have a mount already but were looking for an add-on to gain support from the bumper .
@Dicky did a thread with what I would call an 'elegant' solution. I'd do what he's done if I could be arsked! FWIW, Chips has been on for at least the last 11 years with no issues on a standard mount...
Probably, considering Chips front panel is full of filler. How do we know...we had walked one day in the blistering San Diego heat for about 45 minutes from our Motel 6 to the workshop where he was supposedly completed and ready for collection. The twonk who was doing the work had (it turns out not for the first time) lied about Chip being ready and as we walked round the corner of the industrial complex where there shop was, so this fool came driving past us in Chip. Taking him for the California smog test it turned out. Anyway, surprised, we waved. He waved back. And promptly drove straight into the back of a pick-up truck that was waiting at the junction on front of him. We just turned round in complete synchronicity without saying a word and got completely hammered that evening...
No was on the bus when i got it. Not sure if it was mounted there when it was a minibus or when it was converted to a camper.
We'd been in the Motel for about 3 weeks by that point and had lost the will. Beer works well in those circumstances
This is my little beastie. Mounts to the bumper and custom mount behind the fresh air vent, dickie style! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That’s basically my set up. ( but done a little better.... nice one!) It’s a good solution with no holes in the front panel. If you change your mind then not a lot to make good!
Took me 2 weeks of wondering where the spare wheel was hiding, then thought 'what's this cupboard for behind the driving seat?' there it was all the time.....NB Berlin interior ….also a great space for spares stored inside the wheel rim. Thought about putting wheel on cab front but was put off when advised it sticks out in front of bumper and even a light nudge will damage the cab.
