Hello, We are looking to get a space saver wheel to have as our spare wheel. So far, we have been told a 5 stud 112 is what we need to get. Is there anyone with a space saver - what make / size / do we need to get? Any information would be really helpful. Thanks, Jude & John
Yes there are some, they are load rated. and max 30 miles at 30mph or so. You also need to be aware that you also need to have the central hole large enough to clear the hub. Or they will fit the front wheels and not the back.. And if you have some styles of alloy wheels, you have different wheel nut profiles than for a steel wheel, or nuts that dont go down far enough... Probably easier to not bother at all with a spare, rather than carry around a less than totally useful spare wheel.
Unless you have found a specific hidy-hole for the space saver ( if you have, then please tell all !) the term "space saver" is a bit of a misnomer ... you save the space equivalent to about a Haynes manual.
I have used the spare wheel once in 77000 miles. On a Sunday at NT Petworth House. Drove over a nail. Seemed stupid driving home on three alloys and a stock steel wheel that otherwise lives on the nose where it is held on with @#$#@ imperial nuts and studs.. .. but I could drive it safely using the alloy m14x1.5 wheel nuts because their shoulder profile was compatible with stock steels . As the tyre was a Cooper CS2 fitted by F1 autocentres all I had to pay was a disposal, fitting and balancing charge.. they have a lifetime warranty that includes punctures.
Mine is in front of the rear axle, central. With the winch under the rnr bed. I have a stock height bus with an underslung lpg tank and it doesnt sit any lower than this.
Mercedes space saver wheels have the correct bore and stud hole size, no need to fit anything apart from use it when required
Hi, Thanks for the photos .... do you know what model Mercedes or year ..... or tyre numbers? Have you used your space saver? Was it ok to drive? Ebay have some space savers which look similar. (we had a couple of random space savers we tried they looked good - but one the 5 stud pattern just didn't exactly match the bus & the other one the centre hole was too small & couldn't fit into the right place) Brother working at car yard which has a collection of space savers.... will make the search easier if we have some idea what to look for!!
The situation for our bus with a spare tyre.... We put a full width bed in - so the original space for the spare wheel no longer exists. We are happy to put the spare inside the van - we used bungee cords to strap it upright against the wardrobe cupboard - it narrowed the walk through. But we could still walk through if we needed. The idea was to put the spare under the van when we parked....... we now know a lowered van & a standard spare does not work!! We thought a space saver would get us out of trouble & to get the main tyre fixed if or when we get a puncture.
Mercedes e class. I got it form a scrappy for £40 I think. I'll get the model code, there's a few in eBay. It's fits straight on. Not driven any distance in it but then you wouldn't need to
