sorting my gear shifting

  1. as i haven't got around to sticking my on going resto in the rides section (again) i have up dated here

i got really fed up of selecting random gears so today i took everything to bits, cleaned it up and looked for problems

i think the main problem is the intergalactic mileage my camper has done

i found the wear in these bits last time so had a go at doing something about it

all the bushes have been replaced from front to back again + the stop plate

just to check the short bit on the stop plate is to the 1st,2nd side and longer bit on the 3rd,4th side ?

i welded the wear on the pin (pictured above) up and using some emery paper and electric drill smoothed it out again

with the same emery paper smoothed the ball out and to take up the slack squashed the cup in the shift rod up a bit

putting everything back together (with new grease) was a struggle as everything is now a very tight fit

so far all 5 gears are there and in the right place and everything goes into gear with a very positive clunk

time for a test run tomorrow

  2. Way to go.!!! I have received my order of the bushes for my wondering shifter but have not taken the time to do anything about it. I'm thinking there will be lots of time over the winter to do that. Mean while I'll continue to guess and fish for each shift.

  3. might be worth checking for wear in the same areas as mine

I often do that - and weld up the wear on the cup slot. :) If your gear lever moves in an arc from side to side when in gear, you have this wear. :)

  5. gear change is a lot tighter with hardly any movement in the gear stick

just first is very hard to get into, what direction can i move the shift plate to make 1st easier to get into ?

  6. left , ,maybe it needs to be moved towards the front of the bus...

  7. thanks i will give that a try

First thing is to get lock-out for reverse.
Then put in 2nd and push plate to left until it hits lever.
Then put in first and move rear of plate until it hits.
The idea is that your gear lever will then follow the edge of the plate to guide it into first and second and not get stuck in neutral having gone past the slot towards reverse. Some repeat experimentation will be required.

Of course all this is ***** if your gearbox is worn.
