  1. now i know how to clean and refurb a carb .....which i did on saturday night ...bit *******ed coz the refurb kit from vw hertiage i got only had 2 gaskets and 2 diaphrams i could all the other bits were completey different to my carb .......anyways long story ......carb idle not there ,is there a easy way for the solex to adjust it ....coz im having terrible trouble with this lil bugger ....after years doing carbs im stumped on this one ...i can adjust it, so it ticks over for say 15 secs then just dies.....dizzy is a 050 dizzy ,carb is solex pict34 3 with auto choke and pancake airfilter,,,,,,im thinking that i knocked timing out ?all suggestions welcome .....does the 1600 twinport req timing after carb refurb....?...coz that could be it ....?i also set it up according to a vw book, youtube and various internet sites with no luck .....only done this quick today as it was cold outside ,im only asking coz i havent got time to stand around tinkering at mo ....give me a pcm anyday looooooool...

  2. Was it ok before doing the refurb? Or did you do the refurb because of this problem?

  3. choke probs and was filthy beast ,carbon thick in chamber ....didnt fire up atall....

  4. no crap in jets ...just wont idle at idle loooooool...can get it booming when i chuck it at highest step on the cam ,as soon as it goes down the cam steps the idle dwindles to nowt .....if its warm enuff today ,ill reset everything to factory settings and have another go ...that vw resources is a great read ,i have that in my folder already ,thanks you for the link

  5. crap choke and worn carb ....even a refurb didnt work ,might get it rebushed and need a shaft as well....oh well....better get swopping my guitar collection for parts ....fender 50,s reissue with tags, strat for weber 34 ict with linkage anyone ???/?????

  6. did you blow out all the airways when you rebuilt it ?
i had a similar problem and took the carb apart twice before finally sorting it,it was a blockage in the idle circuit that eventually cleared with some brake cleaner and an airline

  7. ^whs i had same trouble air line sorted it

  8. yeah all clean and blown mate .....i personally think the carb is a piece of crap ..the design of it seems rather poo...whatever the weather with it ,no matter how you tune up ,there always a soddin flatspot ...bigrich ill be paying you a visit soon for a twin carb set up ,and new dizzy ....quite actually like the 050 dizzy but i heard you cant use em with a twin set up ?

  9. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I had same trouble when I rebuilt an engine. No matter what I did it stalled when the choke came off the cam. I must have blown the ruddy jet out 20 times, then I swapped one from another carb and it was fine. I still couldn't detect any crud in the useless idle jet so a bit of a mystery.
It could also be and air leak, but the money's on the idle circuit. I'm sure you know this JS but if you partially cover the carb throat and you can get it to tickover like this, what's happening is you are forcing the carb to suck more petrol, indicating either fuel starvation, or an air leak. The leak would have to be a big one so idle circuit blockage is favourite.
Have you got the stop screw set correctly? Should be a fag paper away from the lowest part of the cam (ie when choke is off). If this is touching the cam, it will be opening the accelerator and uncovering the main jets which makes tuning the carb impossible.

  10. yeah zed bruv ,dun all this .....really hate the pict34-3.....im selling me guitar to pay for a twin weber ...had enuff of the thing .....so im going to sell it ,or play football with it

  11. I'm curious about the stop screw being off the cam, everything I've read says turn enought to feel drag on a bit of paper then 1/2 a turn more IN which touches the cam & supposedly opens the butterfly a few thou'
