Solex carbs

  1. Happy new year all , How difficult is it to remove a pair of solex carbs? I’m not sure where to start to be honest ! I’m planning on getting them refurbished , hopefully with gower and lee . Any advice welcome.

  2. Quite an easy job, just watch out for the spring and cup falling out of one end of the connecting bar and totally vanishing! Leading to removing lots of bits and worrying about it having fallen I to the head... but you won't do that now!

As above, it's pretty straightforward. If you are not familiar with the setup, take a few clear pics, and label up the solenoid wires, so you know where everything goes when you put it back together.
Air filter off, clamp fuel line, disconnect wires to solenoids, remove fuel lines, disconnect throttle cable, pop off drop arms on the linkage, remove vac advance hose if you have one. Slacken the 4 nuts that hold the carbs on, and carefully remove cross bar, making sure you don't lose the spring as mentioned above. Fully remove the nuts and washers, and have a good look round to make there is nothing loose to fall down the inlet manifolds when you are lifting the carbs off. Remove carbs, and immediately stuff the manifolds with a bit off rag.

    Job done.

  4. Cheers guys much appreciated

  5. and take pics as you go along as a reminder for when you get your refurbed carbs back and want to install them correctly. bear in mind you would need new carb to manifold gaskets and probably a good time to renew your fuel lines and new filter under the fuel tank while you are at it. May need new vac advance hoses. YouTube may have a few clips to help.

  6. ... don't worry too much about the wiring as long as they reach any will do as they're all just daisy chained to the same supply as long as they all go back on somewhere. There is a good itinerant aircooled site about setting it all up after if you need.

The stock Solex carbs are documented in the 'Bentley' VW service manual where there are diagrams and instructions.
