Sliding door sill problems - help!!

  1. I've been stuck trying to sort the sliding door sill for a while now and its driving me nuts :(

I've removed the whole floor (too rotten to save and I've got a donor floor) and made a start on the sliding door sill, before doing much to it I welded some brackets from the top hats to the the top of the door step to stop it moving.

Then drilled out the spot welds to seperate the door track from the door step all as below

Next I used a door track from Schofields to repair the door track/middle sill and bolted it back up.

The door slide nicely and everything appears to line up however underneath ....

I've got a 10mm gap between the inner sill and the bottom of the middle sill/door track as you can see in the photo below, I can close it up at the back using clamps but I'll need to cut the middle sill at the front as below which doesnt seem right.

Am I missing something obvious or it just the panels aren't quite the right size?

Both the middle and inner sills are from Schofields, the middle was bought this year and is supposed 'to be within a mm of the original' but the inner was bought about 7 years ago so I suppose it could be an earlier version which doesn't fit as well as it could?

  2. I think this is a common issue , the resto manual I used recommend saving as much of the original as possible due to badly fitting repro ones . Not much use really if you're building from scratch ....
I'd give schofields a bell and see if they've changed anything between the times you bought the bits ??

  3. Hi Lasty,

Yeah everything I've found says they are a bit of a nightmare, I didnt have much of the old one left after removing previous patches and rot but I'm pleased to have a sliding door that opens and closes ok with the same gaps all round

I'll have another look at the weekend and see if I can get some measurements to compare with other van's

My main worry is that the outer sill wont be in the right place to line up with the new front and rear arches as both are long gone at the bottom.

Fortunately for me, no. I only did both outers. The tricky outer is the non-sliding door side.

  6. It looks worse in the photo but will check, I seem to remember the inner is dead straight. The top hats do all line up (apart from the front one which is shorter)

The middle sill is currently floppy at the back so the gap looks smaller, the front is furthest out as there is a step which is pressing against the inner and that's the bit I think I'll need to cut and alter. The kink is where the middle has a joint welded by Schofields to make the panel.
