Sliding door handle removal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Van Halen, Nov 18, 2018.

  1. Hi I've got a late bay but with an early style sliding door n handle (key in handle) I want to refub the lock so I've only one key (none of my keys seem to work) but I can't seem to get the handle off the door?

Is there a trick to getting it out or do I need a Bigger Hammer?

At the moment it opens and closes fine, you can lock using the latch from the inside but the key doest turn in the barrel.

    Cheers,

Think there is a grub screw inside that stops it coming out.
Silly question, but have you tried key in both ways....I spent 2 years looking mine from inside, cursing the broken lock......then tried key the opposite way around.....voila, working lock.

  3. Yeah been reading a few threads so had a go at a few things. I can't get the handle off the door so gettin to the grub screw to get the barrel out is a way off yet!

Looking at the pic on jk of a replacement handle it looks like the handle and square axle bit slide out as one unit when you remove the inner handle but mine doesn't and I can't see anything obvious I have undone?

Wondering if it's just rusted/siezed all together like my wiper spindles were?

It still locks n stuff so not urgent but i don't remember it being a problem when I did all the locks on my old van 20years ago? The problem is it was 20years ago and I've drunk a lot of beer since then!

So you just want to take the handle off, just unscrew the screw on the inside handle that then pulls off then the outside one just pulls out of the lock

As above. It just pulls out when the inner handle is removed. Maybe it's gummed up in the hole and needs gentle persuasion..

Unscrew handle inside. Apply penetrating oil where square shaft meets lock. Allow to soak in. Tap gently on end of shaft then harder with a hammer to push handle out of door along with lock.

  8. thanks - i thought it pulled out but i couldnt remember so I didnt want to get jiggy with the hammer if i was gonna screw something up.

I`ll oil it tonight and have another go tomorrow.

  9. well big hammer and gt85 did the trick - the grub screw is well and truely chemically welded in place and the head mashed - however i managed to resurrect the barrel movement and bar slider bit by turning the key and hitting the slider with a hammer to the exteded position - more hammering and GT85 while makign the slider and key more back and forth freed it up and now i`ve got a working hande and door lock! - and its event the same key as the front 2 doors - quality. and to think i nearly dropped £70 on a new one from heritage when i first got it out... built to last!
