Sleeping bag recommendations

  1. This isn't for the van, we always sleep under a duvet.
I've rather stupidly put my name down to camp over on a 'generic boring car event' early next year and I'll not be taking the van.
I have purchased a small tent and a sleeping mat and I need a bag...
    And some advice please.
Mummy shaped bags - do these have room for a belly of beer or will I not be able to move?
If I spend less than twenty quid will I be buying cheap and cheerful or will I be freezing my tits off.
I'm planning to be buying at go outdoors

    Help please.

  5. Cheapest possible at Argos.

  6. Take a kingsize duvet and roll up like a caterpillar.
Failing that just take the van

It's just an explanation of sleeping bag ratings John!

  8. best recommendation i can give you regarding sleeping bags is to always get in via the open end & it`s normally best to do this feet first

  9. yeh you cant get out of them v quick in the night if you get caught short we use duvet off spare bed.

  11. Dont bother, take your duvet. Put a blanket on top of your sleep mat bring a pillow and if its cold wear thermals too.
I dont like sleeping bags I move about alot at nightand end up in knots with a bag, the mummy ones are worse coz they get all twisted up with me.

  17. Given your resourcefulness as evidenced by your previous post concerning home-smoked back bacon, I would have thought you'd be more inclined to go native and fashion a bed from leaves and such. However, considering the maxim that a fine outdoorsman will use whatever materials come to hand, under the circumstances, I'd be keeping a sharp eye out for a removable duck tonneau cover from an MG TC or similar, and perhaps a worsted wool Tartan throw...check around the Wicker Hampers shortly after people retire for the night...be sure to replace said items exactly as you found them at first light...anything else would'n't be cricket

  19. I have studied all your suggestions, I froze my little tits off in the back garden last night under a pile of leaves, I considered buying a muscabag until I saw the price and then I used my sceptical eye and had another look.
It seems that mummy bags are a cynical ploy foisted on us by manufacturers, another example of something no one wants or needs. Look it's lighter and folds up smaller - of course it does, there's not as much fabric in it, there's not even enough fabric to wrap the average bloke and belly.
So my solution, unless you can do better, is to buy a square bag in the end of year sales for about a tenner.
I won't look at the weight & warmth and what have you, I'll just take an old blanket as well.
    I can haz winnah!
