Why? I get that people with hearing problems need help to enjoy to the full watching TV, but on a pre-recorded show, why not use subtitles....if you can see the person signing in the corner of the screen, you can read the subtitles. I love foreign tv programmes with subtitles and use subtitles sometimes as my hearing isn't perfect....but the person in the corner pulling faces is really distracting. ( no offence intended to any hearing impaired members and family, just curious....and bored !)
English isn’t a Deaf/deaf persons first language, BSL IS..... also the written word can be taken out of context whereas signing has facial expressions & multi-channel signs to counter this.... Deaf/deaf people will usually use both the signer AND subtitles but in this country BSL isn’t recognised as a legal language (because the authorities are backward) & usually (especially in live broadcasts) the subtitles are crap! Certainly does....agree that subtitles can be rubbish....I could have Googled it, but I knew that there were folk on here with personal experience.
Our eldest son is totally Deaf due to contracting meningitis at 12 months old... he had HIb meningitis (the one you are vaccinated against (first case in 25 years in this country)) this left him with no hearing whatsoever! I sign to level 2 standard but Mrs ST took it a few steps further & is a trainee interpreter, she was also recognised by the palace with an MBE for services to the Deaf & hard of hearing. BSL is Daniel’s first language so we have first hand experience of this. Signers should be on all tv programs if you ask me
