hello nice forum you folks have here! . . signed up today and thought i'd pop a bit up of an intro : not had an aircooled vw before but i'm a long term vw fan and serial car modifier. My parents had a late bay (new) in the mid-70's so early family holidays were all in a vw. Whist at uni in the late eighties I helped a mate restore a '70 bug, did bugjam and a few other vw events with him and a few other mates in the early eighties. Lost count of the Golf GTi's i've had probably somewhere around 10 now? Lots of mk3's including a couple lowered/rims etc. Got into sports cars around 2000 and owned 3 lotus's including my fav V8-GT Esprit (magnesium wheels, bilstein coilovers, modified ecu, brake upgrade etc) that i did 50k miles in as my daily driver.. that wasn't cheap! Fast forward to 2014 and my daily driver is a 2012 Octavia vRS with some minor tweaks (lightweight rims, various chassis mods/dropped on coilovers, stage 1 map, brake upgrade, OEM retro-fit interior upgrades etc). Now got two little kids so the Octavia estate is perfect for family transport BUT i have a need to fill my empty garage; a sports car wouldn't get the use any more and i fancy a classic so an aircooled vw is high on the list. We rented a late bay westy over the summer in Cornwall and loved it so we decided to sort out our own van. I've spent the last six months or so researching and trying to buy my "perfect" split. Got as far as agreeing to buy and paying deposit THREE times only to have the sale fall through. Lost count of the number of van's ive seen but its well over 20..! SWMBO (who's always right lol..) has suggested we should maybe spend a little less and get a "sorted" bay pop-top like the one we rented as it's probably going to suit our needs a bit better than my gnarly patina split projects that i've been getting a bit obsessed by.. So.. might be a late 70's Westfalia Berlin coming soon? Fingers crossed. Oh, and I'm in Oxford btw if there are any local meets let me know? cheers Rob
Welcome to the forum Rob, enjoy! I did see your post on Alan's Westy in the for sale section, Al & Tina are good friends, that Westy is very well loved and looked after, it's well worth viewing! @bumpnudger7 will be along soon no doubt!
Hello & Welcome from The Colonial Contingent. As Bern said, there's plenty of advice here some good, some decidedly odd.
Just out of interest why a late 70's and not early 70's? Are you looking for a import or UK van. Mines a Aussie import so very solid and is RHD we have 2 boys who love going away, so I'm sure your children will love it. Hope you find something lovely and hope to see you at a weekender
Hello and welcome there is a few of us in the Oxford area we will be hopefully having a meet in the Burford in the spring time
Wow. great response! I'm in Yarnton, just of the A44. Burford meeting would be great. I'll keep an eye out for info on that. A couple of pics for you dudes; Not 100% sure on the date, but I'm guessing 1974?
