Decided to take apart the alternator that didn’t work when I put the engine back in earlier this year. Found this:

One charred wire and one all but burnt through.
Is this the internal regulator? Can I get a replacement somewhere? I googled the number stamped on the side but found nothing.

No. The internal one (if you’ve got one) is (surprisingly) inside the alternator.

 

This was inside the alternator! Not sure what it is then.

Possibly a suppressor capacitor, to filter alt noise? The terminals don’t look original Bosch. Any markings on the top?

You can live without it...

 

I think one of the wires looked like it ran to the terminal that connects to the alt dash light. I was just sorting through my bay spares and thought I’d take a look. Seems a shame to chuck it if I can find the part and replace it.

Does your alt charge ok without it? I’d be wary of connecting anything odd to the alt light output. If you short it to ground with the engine running, you may pop one (or all) of the auxiliary diodes in the diode pack.

Nope! Had to replace the alternator as the dash light never went out presumably because of this burnt out wire. This was an alternator I bought from cool air probably 5 years ago.

I’d put money on something not right with the internal diode pack.
