Shock querry

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bigred, Dec 2, 2018.

  1. Hi all just replaced front shocks on my 1977 panel. They were bit shorter than the ones that came off and now dont hit the bump stops.
Unless i take off a bridge at over 100mph I'm thinking not a problem?
Adjusted to middle of rebound for now as wont be test driving for sometime, lots to do![IMG][IMG][IMG]

You might find they top out when the wheel drops in a dip. Only a test drive will tell you for sure..

Shorter shocks are useful if you do not have bump stops. Then the tyre rubbing on the wheel arch works better than banging on the front beam horns with the bottomed out shocks...:)
The slightly shorter Beetle rear shocks put on the front of a bus are often a solution for banging. Adjustable coilovers with adjustable damping set quite hard are the harsh solution to rubbing and banging.
Not lowering is the full solution..

  5. Not fitting them to stop rubbing? Replacing old ones and was told these were the correct lengh when i bought them until they arrived.

  6. If you ordered stock length they have sent you the wrong ones

  7. Yeah i know thats why im asking if these would cause problems as seller said will be fine.

  8. Standard shocks aren't designed to act as bump stops, thats why VW fitted bump stops. You are also limiting suspension travel which lessens axle articulation, you need good axle articulation for keepng the wheels on the ground on large variations on road camber front to rear. Just get the right shocks.

If you bus is at standard ride height, the dampers are too short and have topped out, that will also happen as you drive along. They are wrong, send them back. However, it’s difficult to tell from the pic but is the bus lowered? If it is the dampers might work.

  10. Its on dropped spindles, only changed shocks as old ones were shot. This is the difference i believe [IMG]

If it’s on drop spindles you need standard length dampers. Those are too short, send ‘em back.

  12. Great i asked seller first and was assured they were correct and as he is from what i understood to be a 'good' shop 't2d' i went with the more knowledgeable person.

I have 2.5” drop spindles and use GAZ coilover dampers with 100llb springs. http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=5244

Did you tell t2d that you had drop spindles, or that it was lowered a bit? They'll know those dampers are wrong for standard height or drop spindles.

  14. Yes said dropped spindles and he said would work well with them.
Will go back up garage tomorrow check travel with load in it and go from there i guess

You’ve tried them, they’re too short, send them back.

  18. I haven't tried them as yet, will check it tomorrow for travel see if the small difference in lengh will be an issue.

I thought the first pic was with them fitted – they’re too short.
Incidentally, what do you mean by ‘Adjusted to middle of rebound’?

  20. ^this. Your new ones are obviously too short, and looking at the pics are limiting the suspension travel. Back they go!
