Shelly the 79 Panel Van

  1. I dont do restos, but I am interested in your van and look forward to seeing your progress.

I agree with the comments so far that the van you bought is honest and the chassis looks sound. Nothing hidden, you could see its condition.

Your choice of colour is excellent and one colour all over is best.

  2. thanks @mgbman
I'm glad I got it blasted. I'm going for a harvest moon beige from the new beetle - LB1M. we changed our minds on satin finish. it's very hard to get right.

  3. that happened in one of my posts on another thread, I typed beige and it came out as magnolia!

  4. see ! i actually typed b e i g e without the spaces, curious that.

  5. You can't say sh1t either. It comes out as Marmite.

  6. My panel took over 3.5 years to get done and that was working on it two days a week. Right hand panel always seem to rot in the same places. I wasn't great a welding till I started my van haha. Panel vans are go.... keep at it.

  7. I've given my van over to a pro to do the welding and painting as I just couldn't get the time. I don't live at home, where the garage is, and I don't have room where I am so it was going nowhere. I have it a year this month and she's coming along so I'm not too panicked. If I get it back in January/February I can put it back together before the summer. wishful thinking maybe but that's what I'm aiming for :)

  8. Yea my paintwork took over 1.5 years to get done but mine is a little bit mentle for some haha. Yea lucky for me I had a dirt floor steel barn to do it in.. well if you liked coming home covered it dirt after a day of welding under the bloody thing. Things we do for fun.

  9. I remember that from my last bus. dirt falling in my eyes. welder sparks burning through my clothes and making small holes in me! I used to work shifts and I thought it would be a great idea to work on it at 6am straight after my last night shift that week. Dad found me asleep under the bus at 9.30 in the morning.

  11. Does anyone know if a bay window windscreen is similar in size to a 1303 windscreen? I pulled one down out of the loft to give to the guy who welded my front panel on and the gaps seem a little big. I'm 99% sure it's for my bay but ...

  12. No they are completely different shape

  13. Cheers thanks. I should point out that we sat it in there without the seal but I still thought the gap was big

  14. the guy doing my bus sent me this photo the other day. I'm going in for a look as soon as he has all the welding done and before it goes for filling, priming and paint. do you think that gap is too tight between the corners and the tailgate and engine lid?

  15. front end welded too. I know, I know it's a crossdresser impersonator now

Well, the bottom line is...are you happy?? :D
If it looks OK in the flesh & doesn't rub off the final paint on opening & closing when it's all done then..., Yay! (there are seals to go in there yet remember)
Been there myself & when you pay money to someone else you want perfection.

The reality is that when the bus is on the road, you're out there with the family etc living the dream....it don't matter so much.

Bit of a sh1t-tip photo to send to a client though:eek:

  17. I've told him that I need to see the welding before it goes to paint so I guess it doesn't matter sending me those photos. I'm going to see it anyway.
I'll be hoping he tidies up the rear end a bit. the lines aren't exactly straight. between the tailgate and engine lid hinge panel for example.

  18. Looks okay from here.
