set up of '3 screw' headlight

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Richard Simons, Jan 27, 2012.

  1. Hi. Trying to set up the '3 screw' headlamps on my LHD 1978 bay.
As they are at the moment the beam is higher on dipped that full beam, and the lenses are original LHD ones that should dip to the right.... The reflectors are both rotated such that the sidelight sockets are horizontal towards the midline. Two of the three rim screws retain the rim, and only one set up as adjuster. Looks like PO either set these up according to the beetle diagram by mistake and bodged it as he couldnt get the rim to hook under the edge of the bucket or it was a deliberate bodge to get the bus through an MOT with LHD lenses. (it did!!)
I have bought a pair of RHD lenses, but just want to check I am assembling them correctly:
two of the three rim screws should be attached to adjusters, the remaining horizontal screw towards the midline retaining the rim.
the reflector should be rotated such that the sidelamp socket is towards the bottom, so that the headlamp bulb is aligned such that its middle spade connector is at the top.
    am I ok so far??
the last thing to figure is where should the third rubber reflector mount thats not attached to the two adjusters be clipped to the inner rim? 4 o'clock or 7 o'clock?
(I was going to get around to it about teatime....http://thelatebay.com/Smileys/default/thinking.gif)

  2. I'll probably be corrected here.

When I put my lamps in I put them with the vw stamp on the glass at the top. I'm sure there is only one adjuster on these, up and down. The later models have one screw holding the chrome rim on.

  3. whs ^^^

If you don't get a definitive answer I might be able to take some photos over the weekend of how mine are on. However, I'm sure when I fitted mine the only thought I had was make sore the VW imprint on the lens was the right way up and then all the screws just aligned.

  4. do you mean 3 screw headlight rim?

  5. yep 3 screw. if only one is an adjuster, the other two are to retain the rim in the bucket then?
my buckets have four tabs, but I assumed these were mounts for the american sealed beam mounts

  6. On the JK blurb about their new hella three screw headlights, there is a reference to altering the position of the reflectors (and presumably lenses) for T2 use . This makes sense (to me) as the lights are rotated 90 degrees on t2s. The shade to the side of the dipped beam filament in the bulb should logically point downwards so rays are bounced off the top half of the reflector and down to the road. (I think...)

  7. ?

3 screw headlight rim's use 1 screw for holding headlight rim to the body and 2 for adjustment purpose's

think we need pics of your headlights to help buddy

  8. have you bought 3 screw headlight assemblies?

you got a link to what you've bought?

  9. i'll dismantle one tomorrow and show you with some pics. You should have 2 adjusters per light, one vertical one horizontal so you have range and direction adjusted correctly. Sounds like you have things almost right
    :)

I seem to spend a lot of time assembling these correctly after MOT fails.

Sidelight bulb should be at the bottom.
There should be 2 adjusters diagonally opposite each other.
There should be one fixed rubber mount between the two adjusters - either position will work, but not both! - this is the pivot you adjust them on.
The writing on the lens should be the right way up and the pattern should be perfectly horizontal.

    "Eyebrows" should not be fitted.
