Ok, here are some pics of the engine bay (in daylight), heat exchangers etc etc, basically anything I could think that was asked for. As you can see the fire damage is pretty localised to the foam and fan guard. Maybe it was just an oil spillage that sparked. There was still the lack of power that i got going up the hill that am guessing foot flat at 25-35mph caused it to overheat a lot????? Looking at battery tray Heater fan Heater fan rear Towards oil funnel Down on Oil funnel Underside where I had oil leak before (thanks joker ) Behind exhaust in middle Coil Opposite battery Fan & belt Near side rocker cover No idea (maybe exhaust again from awkward angle Underneath up into where foam once was Around oil funnel again Off-side rocker cover Underside Off side fan air hose Nearside air hose Anyway, cheers for opinions Stu
looks and sounds (from earlier description) that it was just the foam seal that caught fire. clean it all up get rid of any excess oil and fit a new seal, carry on driving but keep an eye on it.
I agree with the general concensus. Oil soaked seal prob falling to bits. one of my cust's had the same experience. It's possible that some charred crud got sucked through the fan and is now blocking the cooling fins, but unles they're oily and sticky I expect it would have carried on through and out the other side.
this was mine just to make you feel better... Luckerly, I only had to change a few things ,just give it a good clean... I took half a reliant regal up to my bedroom ,I remember getting oil on the staircarpet : ,later my mum discovered the stripped block under the bed ,I remember thinking ,have I no privacy.. :-[
same with me. No privacy. Bizarrely she moaned about the pistons under my bed, but not about the big stack of porn mags she had to move to see the engine bits
Thanks to all for comments on this, I agree that's what it looks like, now for just getting my replacements in and trying to deal with the heat. Going are the points in the dizzy, 123 coming now after various discussions on the old site, new bellows, what else can I replace to get as close to ensuring it doesnt overheat again as I can.
Just clean that oily mess up, fix the oil leaks and buy some new foam. An overheating engine will get hot, but not hot enough to set fire to stuff.
