My 73 baywindow has only a rock and roll bed in the rear, there are no seatbelts fitted in the rear.

What are the regultions in respect to having passengers in sitting on the rock and roll bed as a seat and travelling as passengers.?

Can they sit in the rear at all ?

If they can sit in the rear must they wear seatbelts ?

    Ta

Mrs JT and the lady cub sit in the back on the RnR, lap belt for wife n 3 point inertia belt for little one. There are points to affix belts to, and am pretty sure there is a thread on the forum somewhere 're fitting belts. Legal side, I would imagine if you have folk sitting in the back they must wear seat belts, but I don't know for sure. Purely from a safety viewpoint you would want to put belts in

  3. You would be mad not to put belts in the back most of these vans have mount points in the rear even if u put lap belts in its better than picking them up off the road. There's loads of threads on here about seat belts its a quick and easy job aswell. :)

Thanks for the above , i was realy enquiring re the legal side , do they have to have seatbelts fitted by law , to have passengers in the seats

I took van out today and just thought , could anyone come with us in the rear and i simply didnt know the legality of it .

Having the above advise re safety i agree with it , however, sitting in the drivers seat at 50 mph ,with just 2mm of sheet metal infront of me , didnt realy make me feel i was in the safest vehicle on the road .

You don't have to have rear seat belts fitted legally, they came in in 1993 I think

  6. Unless it is a child, then you will have to fit them

  7. if you after lap belts go Amazon or Ebay, cheaper than the big boys and same belt

  10. ^^^

  11. Rear belts started getting fitted from 85 so if there not in you dont need em but like everyone else ive put them in but would like 3 points in rear if anyone can tell me how to fo it

  12. If your bus has been a camper since the 70s then no requirement for seatbelts but as of 2006 (I think) children must be strapped up properly in ALL vehicles with few exceptions.

If you converted your bus fairly recently (10-15 years) then you may be on dodgy ground and will have to check the regs.

Cars were 1986, campers/motorhomes are different which causes confusion.

  13. there is a lot of accelerating space between the rear seat and the back of your head

  14. Easy enough to put in with a R&R bed aren't they? I've put them in as not taking chances but wasn't easy in a Devon!

  16. I fitted two lap belts into Tilly, she is fitted with a rock and roll bed. Mounting points were under seat on rear body, make sure they are in good condition otherwise you may as well bolt to cardboard.

  17. Indeed. The mounting points are there, so best to slap belts in.

    thanks for advise ,
i will have to look at fitting some , even if just lap belts
as stated i only have the rock and roll in at the moment but plans afoot to fit sink fridge possibly cooker in near future so wont be doing belts just yet ,but will include in the refurbish of interior

  19. You also have to consider whether the rear seat/bed is suitable and how the cushions are attached (they must be firmly affixed). This is to avoid a passenger sliding under the belt ("submarining") and possibly being hung by the neck.

Our van is a converted panel van which has a wooden rear seat, loose cushions and no rear belts.
It would need a crash tested rock & roll bed, fixed cushions and rear seatbelt mounts welded in before I'd consider fitting belts and carrying passengers.
