Scotland ban smacking children.

I think I'm against legislation. There is other legislation to stop abuses that is in place to protect children.
I was smacked quite often as a child/teen and look at how I turned out :). I was usually smacked for misbehaving so it was as a consequence of something I'd done.

Also I feel policing a parent who smacks their child as a one off, not a beating, will take resources away from stopping those that regularly physically abuse their kids.

You are probably one of the zillion kids of our era who were just misunderstood and the easiest way to control us was to beat us. We probably didn't need a smack!

I have never hit my kids and never will. We have had rows and they have got very frustrated with me and mum,but that's just the growing up process. I like to think they have been allowed to find themselves without the threat of a beating hanging over their every bad judgement.

Besides, they are bigger than me now!:oops:

  4. I think the teacher thing ,getting the "slipper" "cane" was more of the embarrassment in front of your class ,rather than the pain...

Never hit my kids ,they just had a natural fear of me....;)

France wacking the kids is obligatoire...

If they had that system in school today I would sue them for slippering my kids. Some were just sadistic and got way too much enjoyment from it.

It's the thin edge of the wedge. If you can't give them physical punishment, then the only options you are left with are confinement to bedroom and deprivation of things like pocket money and sweets. Then it won't be too long before some do-gooder comes along and says that is a contravention of their human rights! In other word, you won't be able to do anything with the little b*****s.

    O tempora, o mores!

My reasoning is this. If you bring your kids up properly Talk to them, listen to them, have time for them, do things with them, teach them proper values and encourage them in whatever they do, then they usually respond better. You don't have to beat the crap out of them to control them. It's just the easier option for a lot of parents. On the other hand a lot of parents cba'd to spend any time with their kids at all and leave their upringing to others and chance. The results are often catastrophic in both the beating route and the careless route. You have to work at your kids like you do a marriage!

Not having a go at anyone on here btw, just pointing out some of the things most of us would find obvious!

Because they're gowing up, exploring new frontiers, boldly going etc. They want to see how far they can go and someimes need to know when to stop or be stopped. This is valuable training for them for later years when they hit the real world.

Once at school during the end of term play ....one of us farted in a very quiet part of the play in the audience as were not in the play . We all started giggling then another let rip increasing the embarrassment for the drama teacher who was near us ...all the parents were there turning there heads to our direction .
Afterwards the drama teacher singled all the suspects including me , and said "Right" you all go to the headmaster to get caned, or it is 6 times round the running track at 6 in the morning ....i will be supervising .

We all chose the cane .

  19. Not sure what to make of it. Government getting a bit Soviet. Denounced by your own family.

In my view (getting too darned complicated as usual) any use of power needs of be justified,
So if my little kid goes to run in the road in front of a truck, I might whack them on the legs or something to put the fear of God into them doing it again. Maybe I'm wrong and just speaking to them would work.
But if they're screaming in the shop (cos their bored or something ) then whacking them isn't justified. It's just not black an white.
