I'm not trying to rationalise it...just saying that it's a billion pound industry in the UK alone, that's one big fight over what?

I'm happy to have me car MOT'd so don't care if they implement it.

The whole type approval thing came about from half chassis being pulled from lakes and being sold as £1m Bentleys.

These vans aren't body off chassis vehicles, there's little or no credit in 'matching number' vans anyway.

Finally....how can they award a Q suffix when that style of number plate finished 18 years ago?!

  2. You will have to have MOT if you happy or not - you have a scooby.
and they look hard enough and think that there are too many modifications you will get a q plate and it will be prefix.

  3. Boys boys boys, let them get on with it.

  4. Well that was a fun read. Is it summat to do with the lunar cycle or sunspots or something.

  5. I suppose to sum up from the original posters initial question,
Yes you get more power, reliability, drive ability, fuel economy and better availability of spare parts.
However the one large and well illustrated downside is the fact you will have to shell out £40 a year on a mot.
Seems like a decent compromise to me.

  6. You can get a good bunfight if mentioned...:chewie:

I have to have an MOT right now ....I don't want to have an MOT test removed...happy or not it represents ZERO CHANGE for me and all other Subaru owners.

You honestly think that MOT testers know enough about what original parts these things have fitted to them that they will go out of their remit and become some form of type approvals expert?

I'll plaster the engine with VW stickers...bet you 99% of testers will simply despair at another old van and couldn't care less.

I'll use the classic specialist MOT place I've used for the last 8 years...the one staffed with classic car guys well up for Q plating a 'classic'

If the worse comes to the worse and they put a Q plate on my van that's been tested yearly for condition and emissions, I'll get to drive it whenever.

Or did you really think that the vehicles not tested and on old polluting technology would be left with zero restrictions on use in the future?

  9. Heater arrangement needs to be changed when a Scooby is installed ... if done properly not a problem and I now actually have a working heater!

  11. My sprinter is limited to 56mph, My van will do that, whatever I drive I can set off safe in the knowledge that I can hold people up that should have left earlier !! :)

  12. So have the gov't now changed from the points system to a system where ant substancial modification is not allowed?
And who determines whether 'same basic engine type' can be considered as a 4 cyl boxer engine to a 4 cyl boxer engine or an air cooled to a water cooled?
Is this not a bit subjective as the giv't guidance does not go into this level of detail.

  13. In terms of value btw i have been scouring every website known to man to try & find the right bus & can confirm that having a scooby engine defo increases the value...having just missed 2 highly priced scooby buses which both sold within 24 hours!

  17. You've taken the engine and gearbox in and out so many times now, you would be able to build a replacement bus to similar specs in no time now... ;):p

  18. Actually yeah, it's not that hard
