No - That particular status is based purely on the build date of the vehicle (not the date of first registration)

What or how the vehicle is powered doesn’t come into it.

  3. However if you have subaru and other modifications with it such as red 9, lowering, notching (not all at once necessarily) you will loose you registration number and get q-plate and loose historic status.

  4. We've been through all that before, I can't recall anyone who has it done (Subaru transplant) being on a Q plate or being unhappy that they went to the trouble and expensive of going Subaru.

I have no idea what PHH means, I have the original engine in me bay and split and would not change that by the way.

  6. No need to speculate, IVA rules are online for everyone to see. If you have your van modified enough to trigger IVA but you did not declared it it does not make legal.

  7. so U say

  8. but yea keep living in denial. It will be fine until you will get pulled over by vosa.

  9. Yes ... I have nothing deny ... I have a Subaru engine, my insurers are aware and DVLA have been advised. A change of engine only doesn't make it illegal so i don't understand why you keep going on about that?

I think that a lot if modifications are OK provided somebody started doing them within 10 years of the date of last production.
As changing engines over is, and has always been a normal VW pastime as they never really lasted the life of the vehicle anyway, a Subaru lump probably fits that profile.

  11. Ive have seen subaru installs where chassis have been substantially cut or drilled to fit cooling pipes, heaters, radiators, engine mounts, gearboxes, list go on, well if you have read carefully DVLA info you would know that this van should have to go through biva and would not be allowed to keep its reg / status.

  12. I'm sure you'll provide the link for that also.

  13. you can stay in your make believe world, OP wants to know about pitfalls of Subaru conversion and he clearly will not get it from you subaru fanboys.

I have never seen a Subaru converted bus that has needed chassis mods other than drilling a few holes..

  15. Not a fan of subaru installs in classic buses then?
How about non standard shocks 0r lowered suspension, perhaps a pair of twin carbs is upsetting or an EFI kit?
Whats the issue? Ive seen lots of subaru installs too where no substantial chassis modifications have taken place either?

    The regulations state:

Engine – alternative cubic capacities of the same basic engine and alternative original equipment engines are not considered a substantial change. If the number of cylinders in an engine is different from the original, it is likely to be, but not necessarily, the case that the current engine is not alternative original equipment.
So a flat 4 cylinder engine being replaced by a flat 4 cylinder engine not a substantial change, still petrol, still 4 cylinders and in many cases same cc

  16. but Subaru is not alternative original equipment. if you change t1 1600 to t4 2000 then sure not subaru..

    In the classic world...

What about Honda engined Rovers? Yamaha engined Toyotas, Vauxhall engined Saabs....and let's not start with the French cars.

Generations of Italian bikes with jap engines, Jensen Interceptors with Chevy engined...have Lotus ever made a car with their own engine (not just the head)?

So all those could put modern engines in by the same original manufacturer, and be untouched?

They made T2 up until something like 2013 didn't they with air cooled VW polo engines...dunno if they still had steering boxes...but I suspect any 4 cylinder VW group engine is viable?

  18. Well you can rationalize it however you want but there where only 4 OE engines in T2 and that did not include Japanese or Italian engines . And yes they still have steering boxes and the engine is from vw fox not polo. This is pointless.
