I’ll guess he means the bit of hose in the pic. Can’t the coolant pipe go above the axle tube like the old air-cooled Y piece does?
Thanks for the engine, been following your progress closely for when I get round to doing mine. Will document my engine teardown of your old Type 4. I would feel inclined to change the fuel filler rubber and all the breather rubbers while you have the bulkhead off as they look frighteningly original.
The whitish pipes? There not short bits and are water pipes from a T25. Very secure and out of the way.
I changed the top fuel filler rubber about 5 years ago but your right the bottom end is original. They’ve also lasted 45 years so they can stay. If they leak then I’ll change it but I’m in no rush to do so. I’ve learnt over the years that new stuff looks lovely for 5 mins then falls apart
Yes, they don’t line up so the short hose is under tension on the outside and compression on the inside. Is there enough space above the axle tube for the plastic pipe so the two pieces line up?
I’m referring to either pic. Perhaps it’s the angle of the camera but it looks like the plastic pipes don’t line up. I’ll ask one more time – is there space for the plastic pipes to go above the torsion bar tube? With the pipes running down under the tube and then back up again to the radiator I’d have thought there would be an air lock.
Here’s a pic where we are currently at I need to redo the fuel pump mount, I just used what holes I had until the proper mount turns up. Changed all the fuel lines for some of that fit & forget stuff that I brought a while ago. Very happy as I’d probably lost only half a cup of fuel doing the tank end. Had to by some 11mm hose for the filter to pump but had to buy a 1m minimum. Again fit & forget but at £30 delivered . Had to buy a pipe bender so I can bend the gearbox dipstick as Subaru engine got in the way, that’s now all fitted so I can fill with oil now, just waiting on that being delivered. Must start on wiring needs a bit more thought I think.
Fitted the accelerator cable earlier today, still need to do any final adjustments but it’s something else ticked off.
Bit more done today Got the wiring fitted This is in the bottom locker and gives easy access to the key for immobiliser. Water bottle mounted and hopefully filled with water. There’s bound to be some air locks which will need dealing with. Rad fans wired up, 7 core cable fitted from rear to front for engine light, immobiliser light and vehicle speed sensor. Doesn’t look like I’ve done much but it’s all fiddly and takes time.
So tonight took it for a quick (slow!) spin up the road to see how the auto box is.... and it’s perfect, or it seemed to be, didn’t go to far or fast. Got air locks in water which needs to be sorted. Few other bits to do as well. wiring etc. And then just got to tidy everything up.
