The fibreglass Devon roof on our van is sagging in the middle. I haven’t really inspected it properly yet, it works as it should and doesn’t leak, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they did about it and could give some pointers as to what to look for and possible fixes before I start.

Looks like this. As if it has been sat on and needs popping back out, but it is a genuine sag.

My Aussie roof was a bit like that.
We took it off and put it in front of some mahoosive halogen heaters. Once hot we popped it back out.
I added a few cross braces to the underside before doing the headlining. It’s fine so far!

Good idea. How did you brace it, was it with timber?

Yep, a couple of lengths of 2x2 contoured to the shape across the underside.

Did you glue them in place?

Same roof as I got Malc, but yours does look like someone has done something on it as in sat or stood on it or maybe just junked over in a lock up perhaps. I looked at all the ways of strengthening and mine wasn`t as dented as yours, Originally I was gonna fibreglass some roofing battens in there thus forming fibreglass box sections. What I came up with in the end was glueing 25mm of celotex then 3mm of foamex sheet to the roof and relying on the laminating effect, tucked it in under the alloy edge trim but also had it wrapped. If yours has a dent in there, before you repair it I`d have a good look all over it for any damage to the verticals (EDGES) especially in the corners. Once you got the guts stripped, I reckon an eighteen inch plank with some sort of Tommy prop and warm him up internally with a heat gun then gradually tap the prop into vertical.

  11. My ‘79 has the same problem- only in the last 3 years I reckon. It’s kept undercover so little risk of it filling with water but needs sorting at some point

  12. Mine too. Just behind the air vent. Whole thing needs a refurb. I’ll mostly follow this excellent guide. Slightly different roof to yours I think but principles may apply:

I might try cutting metal supports to a length that once flexed and fibreglassed, plus belt & braces fixed in position, will give me the curve I need.
