Rusty jacking points and bent sil - MOT failure?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Floki, Mar 10, 2016.

  1. Heres one for all the MOT experts out there..........you have 1970 beetle and the owner has removed the front and rear bumpers, so the irons are sticking out. A passer by could walk by and cut themselves on the irons. Is it a pass or a fail? Considering it could be classed as a sharpe edge....

  2. In my experience it comes down to how normal it looks to the tester
If it looks factory it's a pass

  3. My bus has passed a fair few mots with a section of top hat missing because there is a heater fitted and it's never failed when it should

  4. Thats a good point, fill or glass it then shed loads of under seal and its a pass. I dont agree that should be the case but it is. I bodged a rear outrigger about 5 years ago. Just had it fixed. Looked as solid as you like. It wasnt! But then again it wasnt any worse than the microns thick steel of one thats on its way out.

  5. Then theres buses with belly pans with very little metal still behind them (not all but definately a good few)

  6. Ahh the clue is in the age ??

  7. No nothing to do with age....

  8. Dont like em and bumpers are somewhat preferable however ive known em fail and also pass. Should fail for fronts in my view but rear? Not about someone walking into it more about a collision. Rears are no worse than a tow bar. Cracked myself on one of them no end of times.

  9. no para all mot welding has to be seam welded , or plug every inch along ie a sill , none of the rot in pics i put up would pass an n i mot it s a vosa mot same as mainland but enforced much more 90 % of gb van would never mot here

  10. Enlighten us then please
The great thing about the net is spreading knowledge

  11. no such thing as advisory here it pass or fail no in between

  15. I'd just like to clear up I'm not a bodger and I'm sure any of my work would pass an Irish mot

  16. So the rot in picture 056 is a fail? ...I best get VOSA to rewrite the testers manual on Monday

  17. both mots in gb mainland and ni are the same but goverment test centres enforce more on the test here , both run by vosa,
here beetle wont pass mot with out bumpers as you could trip on the exhaust pipes sticking out , lol but will if you fit t bars , that you can ,and will trip on . and look crapp lol , in the end its a money MAKING goverment racket

  18. Its a pass and advise as its classed as a deliberate modification, if the bumpers had been knocked off in an accident then that would be a fail due to the irons been a sharp edge .......don't knock me, its just the rules:mad::mad:

  19. If you don't mind me asking....are you an MOT tester?

  20. jesus yes you could cut your arm on that when the window falls out lol
