Yes, but to be fair I did put a winkey smiley after my comment!
    :)

  4. Guys, this is is still driving me crazy. Has another couple of nights fiddling but seemingly to no avail. Checked, re-checked and re-checked again all the usual suspects, ie valve gaps good, points gap good, timing good, plug leads in right order etc. it's ticking over but it just doesn't seem right to me. To get it to tick over I seem to have the idle screw on the weber carbs screwed out way way futher than the 2-3 turns out everyone mentions. Also when I put the carb balancer on (snail type) engine revs rise up and the gauge reads 25-30??????? I have to say its pee ing me off completely now.

Have you tried replacing the condensor? I'm not sure if it'll make any difference, but I have heard people say that they do just pack-up! (This may be a daft comment, as it may not even run with a duff condensor but was just looking at the small things you havent already tried!)

When you say you've put the engine back together was it a full rebuild?

Do you know the history of the carbs at all?

  7. I'm thinking if the engine rev's up when you put on the "balancing tool" perhaps there is a air leak around the carb. bases, or a fuel restriction some where around the intakes? Try getting it to "tick over" and spray some starter fluid or WD 40 around the carb. bases to see if it rev's up , there by finding out if there is an air leak. Just some thoughts!

  8. Sounds like your carbs are w.ank. If it revs more when you put the snail on, then you're making a change to the air flow. Check you have no air leaks in all your joints. I'd be tempted to whip them off and have someone refurb them for you. I'm no expert and still can't do carbs to save my life, but there is a common theme on this forum when peeps have bought used or even used carbs there is an issue. No 2 engines are the same so tinkering is required, but if you don't really know what you're doing you need to get someone who does. I got mine running to how I thought was right, and it was miles out

  10. Try these guys.

Give them a call, the old guy who does the rolling road is an absolute genius when it comes to old school tuning.

    http://www.boggbros.co.uk/about.html

Sorted my carbs out, the spindle gromets had worn so no matter what i did when the spindle moved air was leaking in. Took him about 3 minutes to find and told me where to get the bits.

Once fitted did full valve clearance, rejetting and rolling road. Van has never run so sweetly and pulls like a train.

  11. Yes put a new condenser on it.
Engine wasn't a full rebuild, it was basically just all the tinwear and ancillaries off to clean and paint everything. Only thing 'new' on the engine are the carbs.
I don't know the history of the carbs, but in fairness they 'look' ok. Was a load of crap in them when I cleaned them out but I don't think they have been used in a while. Cleaned out with carb cleaner and blew everything through with airline. As for the jets, I don't know which is which but I think they are 170-160-40, I think...... I'm obviously hoping that the carbs are ok, they ain't cheap copies they are genuine weber Italy 34ict's.

It does point towards the carbs needing setup/work.

  14. If I were you I'd be really tempted to send the carbs to euro carb for refurb. I bough my dells used off eBay - the guy I bought them had them refurbed by euro carb and they were like brand new. They'll have the largest stock of genuine webber parts in the uk. Good idea, especially if you're sure they're not the cheap copies. As for jets, I bought jets for mine based on advice from euro carb, but it's how they behave on he engine and for your application which is important, I got mine to a base level on their advice, then the rolling road did the rejetting and fine tune.

    :)

  15. Right, done the spray trick, and noticed revs pic up when I spray near left hand carb base to manifold, indicating a leak so new gaskets there needed. Hardley noticed any difference when i sprayed the right hand carb area, so would the air leak on the left hand carb cause all the issues?? Also to clarify the jetting situation, I took the carbs off yet again and the results are:
    Main jet-130
    Air corrector-160
    Emulsion tube-f78
    Idle jet-52
    Pump jet-50
    Needle valve-175
    Pump exhaust/spill valve-40
Where to go from here then??

  16. Any thoughts on the jetting you clever engine/carb peeps??

  17. It will run a hell of a lot better with no air leaks dude and youll the adjustments you make to the carbs will have a greater effect

  18.
  19.
  20. Sort those air leaks first dude then take it from there

Once you have it running decent enough as the others have said get it set up on a rolling road
