The big square rubber steering box to steering shaft coulpler ! Is held with 4 bolts ....how do you get them out ? I have box off and new rubber coupler but the bolt threads are knackered . I have undone the cover plate in the cab but can`t slide it up ( and i can`t find my manual either )
Sorry mate, i just undid mine (spanner over the top to hold the nut/bolt) all done from underneath, make a note of where the horn wire - which is sort of trapped on top of the rubber is attached i'e which stud because i think when i put mine back together i put it back on the wrong one and now the horn doesnt work. Doh!
The coupler, as you say, is just held on by four bolts, two on the column, two on the box shaft. If the cover plate won't come off, you may be able to squeeze a flat spanner in from below. If the bolts are knackered, replace them (and replace the self-locking nuts anyway). As above, don't forget the horn earth wire.
The cover plate slips onto the bottom of the outer column so it won't come off without removing / loosening the steering column or breaking the plastic bit. I've also done it from underneath. Fiddly.
well i think mine (dec 72 ) has the plastic bit , the two bolts in the end of the steering column are the ones i can`t get out as they are longer than the gap between them and the cover plate .
undo and remove steering wheel with key in ignition, then the steering shaft will drop out of the bottom of the outer tube and then the nuts are very easy to get at. ps a 73 model year still defo has the plastic clippy bit at bottom of the outer column think it changed at 74
sure the bottom plate changed at 74 when the lock housing changed over to the new style barrel and steering column splines changed to the finer type. my 75 van was very original when i got it and it has the newer lower column plate
