Roll bars ????

  1. can you buy "off the shel" roll bars for a bay???

I mean the sort for strengthening the body work rather than suspension bits.

I'm not going racing or anything ;D just thought fitting then to the cab area might give a bit more protection in the event of a crash

is it possible to install something un obtrusive for front protection????

vw added a deformation panel which is better than a roll cage ;)

  3. I wondered if any one would point that out ;D

If theoretically then ;), you were to remove the deformation panel is there any thing else you could put around the front for added protection

paul weedings got a cage in his fish resto, but i would think off the shelf is unlikely, if it doesnt need to fia, its possible to make one :), you could weld something inside the front panel like a piece of scaffold tube welded to both door pillars perhaps

  5. how about strapping a mattress to the front for that softa crash feeling ;D

  7. I guess a spare wheel on front adds a bit more protection... I have taken mine off as I prefer the look without it but the safety thing has crossed my mind coz theres not much there is there.....

..... also a few months ago I was a witness to a crash on the M20 where this bloke was driving the wrong way down the carriageway which ended up in a head on.... fortunatly nobody was seriously hurt due to modern technology but have thought about how the bus would have fared. sent a shiver down my back i can tell you.

  9. :)) what have I started :))

mine is a bolt together one, but the cab isn't fully caged yet, I was going to add some more into it... I'm quite lowered, so it makes sense.. There's just a low hoop in the front at the mo, but I'm hoping to build off of it... I'll have to see if I've got a picture of it...

  10. ok... you can just see it in this pic

Now i'm planning on taking it up through the dash, over the tops of the doors and linking it into the rear cage... i'll have another hoop that goes round under the airbox too, and something overhead that doesn't get in the way of the sunvisors/head room

    but that all needs finalising

  11. Last time i fitted a roll cage to a car my insurance went through the roof

Going from a 1.6 engine to a 2 litre turbocharged engine only raised the insurance slightly but the roll cage sent the insurance that high i ended up removing in and running without it

    Silly eh

  12. fitting a roll cage to any road car is very dangerous

roll cages are meant for the race track where the driver is sitting in a bucket seat with harness and who's body will not move in a crash

if you hit your head on a steel tube your going to cause your self some serious harm

if your worried then go for what VW provided you with, stock suspension height and let the deformation panel and chassis take the impact and not the front panel and your knees
