Brave bloke - just driving in that era was mental. If anyone's ever had burns, you'll know how painful they are - how he could pull a helmet on over them is remarkable. A very remarkable life, RIP.
lucky enough to meet him in 2017, one of the all time greats, and still a trusted member of the mercedes team even up to last yr.
A legendary gentleman from a bygone era . Saw the film (Rush ??) a couple of years ago , I'm not a massive f1 fan but a good portrayal of a bonkers time . A life well lived ... RIP. Sent from my SM-A320FL using Tapatalk
I met him back in the early '80's, when he visited Dubai in his Lear jet. He had burst a hydraulic hose when he selected 'gear down' for landing. My boss at the Dubai Airwing, another Austrian, roped me in to give Niki a hand with the problem. I found a new hose and fitted it, but we did not have suitable jacks to lift the aircraft for a 'gear swing'. Under the circumstances I dispatched him back to Austria with the gear down, a long slow process! RIP Niki, Blue skies.
Very sad news, my all time motor racing hero There's been plenty of brave drivers in F1 but not many stared Death in the eye like he did and promptly raise a middle finger
I wondered why I hadn't seen this great guy in Mercedes garages this year. Brilliant racer brave man RIP Niki
